Alice springs to new kudos

WNBL Season 2013-14 is underway and it is no longer a case of “Alice in Wonderland”, Dandenong forward Alice Kunek taking her stellar Spring Shield form into the opening round.

Kunek’s 29 points on a dazzling 8-of-11 shooting – 4-of-4 from beyond the 3-point arc – was accompanied by 10 rebounds, winning her WNBL Player of the Week honors.

The Rangers repeated their Spring Shield final victory over Logan Thunder with a high-scoring 103-91 win.

Rare for a team to score 91 and lose but Kunek wasn’t the only standout, Logan’s Laurie Koehn also making a PotW claim with 32 points.

Dandenong is stacked again this season, Olympian Jenna O’Hea back from her Los Angeles Sparks commitments and alongside fellow WNBA players Kayla Pedersen, Natalie Novosel and Leilani Mitchell.

Yet it was Alice who sprung into action, inspired by coach Mark Wright.

“When I first came to Dandenong, he was all about me backing myself and playing with confidence,” Kunek said.

“It’s been really good for me because Mark has backed me to try and explore my game and try and take it to the next level.”

KRISTINA Keneally went on a rampaging WNBL retweet festival today, bringing us uptospeed on quarter-time scores in weekend matches which, dare I suggest it, many of us could now confidently tweet the results of.

Word is KK is overseas and either forgot about the time difference, had a glitch in her phone, or – my own preferred option – was missing Oz so much, she just decided to retweet her little heart out.

All this when she could have retweeted this link: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/basketball/wnba-support-for-opals-as-coach-brendan-joyce-plans-camp-in-us-and-matches-with-america8217s-elite/story-fnii09gt-1226734844703

GEELONG SEABL import Mike Mercer gave it his best shot trialling for Wollongong’s import spot vacated by Durrell “That’s Not Enough Zeroes” Summers but the Hawks will continue their search.

Development player Luke Jamieson will round out the Hawks’ numbers for their season-opening game against the reigning champion New Zealand Breakers in Auckland on Thursday, Wollongong back at the drawing board.

“We’ll have a look and see if some of the players we were looking at (before settling on $ummer$) are still available,” Hawks coach Gordie McLeod said.

Wollongong is looking for more of a swingman than a 2-3, to fill the chasm left by Glen Saville’s retirement.

That’s why Lance Hurdle also will most likely be out of luck.

KK apparently has just contemplated retweeting the NBL is planning to demerge from BA soon.

Meanwhile I need to retweet from my bathroom – yes, I need rescuing - that I have run out of the latest BA white paper.

CHRIS Bosh has been the Miami Heat star who most makes rival fans snigger when talk turns to the “big three.”

Let’s face it, after LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, it’s easy to see how he becomes the “Two and a Half Men” reference for those far more cruel than moi.

But today against Atlanta Hawks – no, not against the Atlanta Dream you scallywags - Bosh scored 21 points in the Heat's first exhibition game of the 2013 NBA preseason, a 92-87 victory.

Wade was out of the lineup, resting his legs after consulting with Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, who was resting his whiteboard.

Bosh began the game with nine points in a row, had 19 in the first half and finished the game shooting 7-of-8, plus 6-of-6 from the stripe.

If he was playing anywhere else, his value would be more greatly appreciated.

Guess the paycheque will have to do.

Meanwhile Derrick Rose scored 13 points as Chicago beat Memphis 106-87, his Bulls teammates busy adjusting to playing alongside their leader again.

Rose was 3-of-8 from the field and 6-of-10 from the free-throw line after only making his first 1-of-5.

“He calmed himself down a little bit after he missed the first couple (free throws), and then he started making,” coach Tom Thibodeau said. “He's finding his rhythm and it's also the rest of the team getting used to the speed he's playing at.”

The Bulls travel now to Rio de Janeiro for Saturday's game against the Wizards.

KK apparently has just contemplated retweeting the Boomers are off to a good start against the USA in their Olympic quarter-final.

It’s just that no-one is sure if she means the London or Beijing Games.
