As happy as Larry

IT HAS already been to Argentina and now the NBA Championship Trophy will hit Australia this week in the capable hands of Patty Mills and Aron Baynes.

The Aussie Olympians were a big part of the San Antonio Spurs’ 2013-14 Championship success and will showcase the Larry O’Brien Trophy – the NBA Championship Trophy named after the former Commissioner – this week around Australia.

This will mark the only time that “The Larry” has been to Australia and it is travelling to the home cities of all nine of the Spurs’ international contingent in their 14-player roster.

“Winning the Larry O'Brien Trophy with this incredible side has definitely been one of the highlights of my life,” Mills said.

“To be able to bring the Trophy home and relive all of the excitement with our fans, family and friends in Australia means the world to Aron and I.”

The Trophy schedule is:

Melbourne – Wednesday

Sydney – Thursday

Canberra - Friday (Patty's hometown)

Brisbane – Saturday

Cairns – Sunday (Aron's hometown)

Thursday Island/Torres Strait Islands – Monday, July 21 (Patty's ancestral home)

“Wednesday we will kick off the ‘Spurs Trophy Tour’ at Culture Kings on Queens St as officials hosts of the Fan Events!” Mills tweeted today before boarding a plane from the US to Australia.

“We'll be there from 4-530pm so if you want to meet the NBA Championship Larry O'Brien Trophy Melbourne... Here is your chance! #historic #larryodownunder #comesaygdaytolarry”

Unfortunately for NBL Grand Final cities Perth and Adelaide, their NBA fans no doubt will be able to see The Larry on various TV news services.

(Though Mills is expected in Adelaide later as a special guest of the AFL's Adelaide Crows who he vehemently supports.)

On Friday in Canberra, Mills will receive the keys to the city from ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher as part of the celebrations.

“I know Canberrans have been eager to recognise the achievements of Patty Mills since the San Antonio Spurs were victorious over the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals earlier this year,” Gallagher said.

“Patty has made significant contributions to this city both on and off the court.

“He is a proud Torres Strait Islander man and a proud Canberran.

“He has mentored and inspired many young people in this community and we are very lucky to have him call this city home.”

The public event will take place in Civic and start at 12 midday.

Baynes also will be there with his London Olympic and NBA Championship teammate.
