Blazers no longer walking in Memphis

IT IS one of the tragedies of the NBA playoffs that reigning champion San Antonio and my beloved LA Clippers are battling it out in the Western Conference's first round.

The series winner is going to wind up playing Houston - which eliminated Dallas - while one of the Spurs or Clips will be revamping for 2015-16 instead of pursuing their title goal.

That's the way it rolls. But the upcoming Golden State-Memphis semi final should be a gem, the Grizzlies today securing their NBA Western Conference semi finals berth beating Portland 99-93.

That made it a 4-1 series victory and made it now five of the "elite eight" teams decided.

Only the Spurs-Clippers, Bulls-Bucks and Hawks-Nets are still battling it out, Atlanta moving to 3-2 over Brooklyn today with a 107-97 home win.

It's been a much tougher series than a 1v8 should be, but Al Horford and Jeff Teague steered the Hawks home with 20 points apiece.

The Hawks now can wrap up the series with a victory in Brooklyn on Saturday but this looks more likely to go the full seven games.

In Memphis, centre Marc Gasol had 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Grizzlies, who now have three days off before the Spaniard faces his Aussie nemesis Andrew Bogut and the Warriors.

Memphis completed the series win without point guard Mike Conley for a second straight game.

He is recovering from surgery to repair broken bones near his left eye.
