Bradtke's #50 joins him in retirement

MELBOURNE’s decision to retire Mark Bradtke’s #50 uniform is a quality effort by the Tigers, even if a little overdue.

Better late than never, the NBL’s 2002 MVP starting his career with Adelaide 36ers in 1988 before being integral in Melbourne Tigers' Championships wins in 1993 and 1997.

Bradtke's No.50 goes into the rafters alongside the retired jerseys of Andrew Gaze, Lanard Copeland, Dave Simmons, Ray Gordon and Warrick Giddey so yes, you can see it was a little overdue.

For it to be raised on the day the Tigers host Adelaide in Game 2 of the semi finals is particularly auspicious, given his history with both clubs.

Indirectly too, it is appropriate for 36ers coach Joey Wright to be present, having been at the helm of the Brisbane Bullets in 2007 where Bradtke made his last career stop and was instrumental in the Championship-win.

Time can make us forget, so it is terrific the Tigers are across this.

Even Aaron Grabau thinks it was a tad overdue though.

The day the 36ers raise Al Green’s #15 and Darryl Pearce’s #4 into the rafters alongside Brett Maher’s #5 and Mark Davis’ #33 it will add another club to the list who have it right.

SPEAKING of having it right, must confess being startled to read Cairns Taipans’ plans for club MVP and 2013 Rookie of the Year Cam Gliddon.

Coach Aaron Fearne has earmarked him to take over at point guard.

(Just in case you were in any doubt then, that’s bye-bye Jamar and ta-ta Demetri.)

“He did a lot of that (point guard duties) anyway and he's improved so much and his maturity and leadership is great and there's no question he's a priority for us” Fearne told the Cairns Post’s Murray Wenzel.

Kind of reminds me of another great point guard conversion plan Al Westover had at Melbourne Tigers for David Barlow.

The benefit playing the point could have for Gliddon’s possible international career is hugely debatable.

We have a couple of guys ahead of him in that role named Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova.

And I recall some interest too in a young man named Dante Exum.

But if Cam’s sole intent is to play NBL all his life – nothing wrong with that – then good luck to him and Fearney.
