Brett Brown back to coach in Australia

PHILADELPHIA 76ers’ NBA coach, Boomers coach at the London Olympics and NBL Championship winner Brett Brown is back to coach in Australia … this weekend.

(Yes I know. After B.O.T.I.’s Bruce Palmer headline stunt yesterday, you won’t so easily be conned today.) But Brett WILL be back taking a clinic at Warrnambool on Sunday (August 10).

The home of the wonderful Warrnambool Seaside Carnival where in my playing prime I once scored 32 points for Norwood in a losing final to Melbourne Church (OK, I may be fudging the facts there but the original scoresheet has been lost so why not? I mean, every import I encountered back then was the last guy cut from an NBA camp…) it also is just a stone’s throw from Port Fairy where Brett’s wife’s family live.

Brown rang Basketball Victoria’s operations manager Grant Wallace, who played for North Melbourne in 1988.

Brown coached the Giants to the 1994 championship and knows Wallace.

“Normally when people like Brett come home, they like to do something to help grow the game,” Wallace told The Standard newspaper.

“He said: ‘I want to do it for free, help grow the brand’.

“My mum and dad live in Warrnambool and I know the Warrnambool basketball community pretty well so it was easy to put together.”

Brown won’t be alone, joined by Chris Anstey, coach of Melbourne United and a former NBA player, multiple NBL MVP, multiple Olympian and multiple championship winner.

Anstey will be looking to grow the new United brand.

Wallace said the United boss’s involvement was significant, ensuring coaches from across the region and state had access to two experienced mentors.

The clinic is free but potential participants must book and register online with Basketball Victoria.

The session will run from 12.30pm-4pm and include a special “questions on the floor” segment.

Brown has requested one question per person registering, which he will answer, explaining and demonstrating situations with players on-court.

Anstey will open proceedings with a presentation of his 2014-15 systems for the upcoming NBL season. (Rival NBL coaches take note, I can get the session videotaped for a modest fee…)

The session is being run in conjunction with Warrnambool Basketball Incorporated and Basketball Victoria.
