Call hurt but not as much as OKC stung

NOOOOOO!! Not a further dreadful bad call in the waning seconds to assist OKC to another surprise playoff road win, surely?

How many times can that happen? (Twice. Just ask the Spurs.)

Seriously, Russell Westbrook blatantly travelled before calling a timeout the official then gave him – right in front of Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr – and from there, Oklahoma pulled away to make it a 108-102 road win.

It was 105-102 at that point, with 17.2 seconds left to tick.

But if you think it’s time to bleat about that call, you’d be wrong.

Frankly, again let’s recognise the work of the unsung hero, the man who was much-maligned during the regular season, Thunder coach Billy Donovan.

Billy the Kid made the appropriate adjustments to beat the Spurs, and TWICE in San Antonio where the home team went 40-1 across the regular season.

In Game 1 of today’s Western Conference Final, OKC hit the changerooms at halftime down 13 at Oracle Arena.

Steph Curry’s 3-pointer beat the halftime siren and Klay Thompson had been wicked, scoring 19 points to the interval.

The Warriors were rolling. Then the halftime break ended and so did Golden State’s withering shooting.

Thompson finished with 25 points but was 3-of-10 in the second half.

While he’d enjoyed 19 in the first half, Westbrook exploded for 19 in the third quarter!

Kevin Durant scored 26 points but it was his mid-range jumper with 30.7 seconds left which stuck the dagger.

Westbrook finished with 27 points, 12 assists and seven steals and now it is the GSW needing to make adjustments.

After all, both Durant (10-of-30) and Westbrook (7-of-21) shot at a woeful 33 per cent and OKC still won.

Kiwi centre Steven Adams had a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double in 36:35 of action and just as Kerr last year adjusted to playing small ball in the NBA Finals against Cleveland – benching Andrew Bogut – this time he has to go the other way.

Bogut saw just 17:27 of daylight and will need to be out there longer if Adams is to be reduced as a factor.

The big Kiwi's free throw makes with 61 seconds left were huge.

Curry finished with 26 points, Thompson 25 and Draymond Green 23.

For the naysayers - and there were plenty a series ago too before OKC KO'd San Antonio - it is clear we have a playoff series on our hands.
