Cavs chasing history now
TweetLeBRON James and his Cavaliers are now just one win from bringing the NBA Championship to Cleveland for that city’s first national title since its Browns wore the 1964 NFL crown.
After comfortably wrapping up Game 6 115-101 today in Ohio, the Cavs head back to Oakland for Monday’s deciding seventh game and the defending champion Golden State Warriors needing to pull their act back together.
James was a tour de force with 41 points at 59 per cent, 11 assists, eight rebounds, four steals, three blocks, including 18 straight points during one second-half stretch which had the crowd chanting “MVP”.
The 2015-16 season’s actual MVP, Steph Curry, again showed comparisons with the “greats” such as MJ, Kareem, Larry, Magic, Wilt, Bill, Kobe and LeBron are very much premature.
For the third time in the six games of these Finals, he had three fouls in the first half. He had a silly fourth at 10:35 of the third period, ultimately fouling out and being ejected after tossing his mouth guard in a show of unbecoming and childish petulance.
Curry still led Golden State with 30 points, fellow Splash Brother, Klay Thompson, with 25.
James and Kyrie Irving (23 points) scored or assisted on 27 of the Cavaliers' 31 first-quarter points as they raced to a 31-11 lead, tying for the second-largest lead after an opening period in NBA Finals history.
It was going to be academic from there, although GSW made its runs.
Thompson went off for 15 of his points in the third quarter, trimming Cleveland’s lead to nine and the Warriors even closed to seven during the last.
Tristan Thompson delivered 15 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting, plus 16 rebounds, Warriors’ power forward Draymond Green playing as though he had a two-match suspension.
King James was a monster with his second consecutive 41-point haul while some were wondering aloud whether Curry would be suspended for Game 7.
Not. A. Chance.
The NBA may have wanted it to go the distance and at 3-3, has its wish.
It may – just may – let the series be decided on merit.
