Celtics throw down 2-0 gauntlet to homesick Mavs

THE Boston Celtics, as expected, held serve in the NBA Finals by winning the opening two games in Boston, leaving the Dallas Mavericks desperate to clinch Game 3 at home to turn this into a series, reports BOB CRAVEN from the US.

The Celtics took Game 2 Sunday night 105-98 in a much closer game than the Game 1 blowout.  Dallas, in fact led all of the first quarter, but it was downhill from there.

This was a closer but sloppier game than Game 1, particularly the three-point shooting:  Dallas shot 6-of-26, or 23.1%, while the Celtics were10-of-39, or 25.6%.

Boston was only 5-of-30 from deep until little Paul Pritchard hit his only basket of the game—a half-court bank shot heave at the third quarter buzzer to up Boston's lead to nine points going into the final quarter.

Jrue Holiday led Boston with 26 points and added 11 boards.  Super-sub and hero of Game 1, Kristaps Porzingis, limped his way to 12 points.

Boston's biggest name, Jayson Tatum had a rough night shooting, going 6-of-22 (1-of-7 from 3-point land), but helped out in other ways with nine rebounds and 12 assists.

Jaylen Brown added 21 points, four boards and seven assists.  Dallas was led, as usual, by superstar Luka Doncic who had a triple double with 32 points, 11 boards, and 11 assists.

PJ Washington added 17 points and seven rebounds, while Kyrie Irving had 16 on 7-of-18 shooting (0-of-3 from deep).

Games 3 and 4 are Wednesday and Friday in Dallas—however, Boston has not lost on the road this postseason.
