FLASHBACK 41: April 12, 1990

FLASHBACK 41: April 12, 1990 *FLASHBACKS, my irregular "lucky dip" where I just reach into my drawers of old Australian basketball stuff and transcribe whatever I find for you.

THIS is a random program from the daily summaries produced during the 1990 Australian Women’s Club Championship during the tournament at Melbourne’s Albert Park Stadium from April 12-16.

The Club Championship annually brought together the best teams from around the nation, seeded into groups and working toward the Championship and the chance to be Australia’s foremost women’s club team in any given year.

With the advent of new national leagues (the WNBL, WBC which then became part of SEABL) during the 80s, its relevance became less significant until, like the men’s Club Championship, it eventually no longer was needed to fill the competition void between states.

These are the Day One summaries from the 1990 tourney. The program featured a front page picture of North Adelaide’s Kay McFarlane and Nunawading’s Gaylene McKay holding position for a rebound.

The summaries are reproduced accurately so apologies if some are truly inadequate but they were the best work of the many volunteers who made such carnivals a joy and their absence a tragedy for the many women players who never have experienced such condensed competition play.

QUALIFYING GAME REPORTS

AIS PUMAS (73) & BROADMEADOWS BRONCOS (61)

The game started with both teams struggling to settle down. AIS ran out to an early lead due to Jodie Murphy’s strong and intelligent play. Broadmeadows fought back to be down by 4 at halftime.

Second half opened the same way, Broadmeadows fought back to within 2 points with 6 minutes to play, AIS then drew away to win by 12 points. For AIS, control of the board and cleaning up by Fegent, Whittle, Brogan and Cook swung the game for them.

For Broadmeadows, Song and Chen never stopped and kept them in contact.

Scorers: AIS – R Fegent 12, T Fallon 11. BROADMEADOWS – J Song 21, Y Chen 19

MVP: J Murphy (AIS)

WOODVILLE WARRIORS (79) & KNOX RAIDERS (52)

The game was aggressive and fast moving with Woodville dominating the boards throughout the entire game. Knox got frustrated towards the end of the game and couldn’t bag a basket.

Woodville’s A. Storoschuk and T. Balter kept the game under control which ended in an easy 27-point win.

Scorers: WOODVILLE – J Barton 27, S Bruce 17. KNOX – Z Mijovic 11, A Bogle 9

MVP: J Barton (Woodville)

SYDNEY CITY (70) & BALLARAT LADY MINERS (63)

From the opening, Ballarat had problems in rebounding due to their lack of height. Sydney led at halftime due to their height and tough defence by Tracy Morris and Michelle Rudd. Ballarat, to their credit, scrapped for the ball at all times to be down by 6 at halftime.

Di Lockett and Belinda Van Der Ploeg kept them in the game but with Leanne Stropper on 4 fouls at halftime, they were in trouble. Ballarat kept fighting but in the end Sydney was too strong and ran out winners by 7 points.

Scorers: SYDNEY CITY – R Boreli 21, D Heta 14. BALLARAT – K Jose 18, D Lockett 15

MVP: B Van Der Ploeg (Ballarat)

COBURG COUGARS (91) & NARROMINE JETS (46)

The final score did not really reflect the standard of the game. A determined Jets came up against a very polished Coburg and try as they might, could not bridge the halftime gap.

Coburg looked for each other and had a more disciplined play which saw them draw away even further and although perhaps soundly beaten, the Jets were not disgraced.

Scorers: COBURG – S Washington 20, J Storer 18. NARROMINE – C Peachy 23, W Richardson 11

MVP: S Washington (Coburg)

NORWOOD FLAMES (72) & NEWCASTLE SCORPIONS (52)

In a sometimes scrappy game, both sides gave their all in a very hard fought encounter. Owing to good defence from the Scorpions, Norwood had to do some hard work under the basket.

Newcastle were perhaps unlucky with their shots which caused Norwood to pull away in the final minutes to come out victors by 20.

Scorers: NORWOOD – C Hogg 18, T Haase 15. NEWCASTLE – K Adnum 21

MVP: C Hogg (Norwood)

PARRAMATTA WILDCATS (81) & BAYSIDE BLUES (74)

The first half was a very scrappy affair and although Jeanne Richards had 4 fouls early, Parramatta still had the strength and height to go on. Sue Barton of Bayside fought out the game with only a short rest but could not carry the load herself.

Whenever Bayside closed the gap, Amanda Hathaway would strike back. Defence from both Hathaway and Barton was strong.

Scorers: PARRAMATTA – A Hathaway 27, J Nicholson 19. BAYSIDE – S Barton 29, B Grebac 12

MVP: A Hathaway (Parramatta)

FIRST ROUND GAME REPORTS N

ORTH ADELAIDE ROCKETS (109) & SYDNEY CITY (44)

North Adelaide started the game with tough aggressive defence which paid dividends for them. With their backcourt working well, led by Vicki Daldy and Jacqui Pearce, they were able to get the early break on the Sydney City side. Sydney seemed to be a little over-awed by the occasion and were trailing 51-26 at halftime.

North continued their strong work in the second half with their guards again controlling the game, Donna Brown and Rachael Sporn both playing a strong inside game. North Adelaide ran out rather convincing victors.

Scorers: NORTH ADELAIDE – D Brown 29, R Sporn 17. SYDNEY CITY – M Rudd 15

MVP: Vicky Daldy (North Adelaide)

BROADMEADOWS BRONCOS (69) & KNOX RAIDERS (63)

Both teams started the game quiet slowly. Knox picked up their defence during the first period but unfortunately could not go into the break with a lead which Broadmeadows held by a narrow 6-point margin.

Broadmeadows’ good team effort from all the players and some good shooting touch shown by Jenny Song resulted in them carrying over the 6-point margin and finally winning by the same amount.

Scorers: BROADMEADOWS – J Song 24. KNOX – J Laidlaw 19, K Linssen 16

MVP: Jenny Song (Broadmeadows)

BAYSIDE BLUES (74) & NEWCASTLE SCORPIONS (50)

Newcastle started well with their teamwork standing them in good stead. However a strong effort in defence gave Bayside a good springboard to an improved offence, with Martene Burke controlling the ball and Sue Barton hitting well off the free throw line.

Bayside continued their intensity in the second half which resulted in them having a comfortable win.

Scorers: BAYSIDE – M Burke 22, B Grebac 15. NEWCASTLE – J Adnum 11, K Adnum 10

MVP: Martene Burke (Newcastle)

BANKSTOWN BRUINS (64) & COBURG COUGARS (59)

Coburg Cougars started slowly and allowed Bankstown Bruins to jump them at the start of this match. Their poor shooting form did not help and if Jo Storer and Sharon Washington had not found touch, the Bankstown girls, with their more balanced offence and defence, would have had an even bigger lead at halftime.

Karen Dalton for Bruins had a great first half scoring 16 points but Coburg were able to contain her in the second half to edge back within five points at the final whistle.

Scorers: BANKSTOWN – K Dalton 21, S Brondello 14. COBURG – S Washington 18, S Sullivan 12

MVP: Karen Dalton (Bankstown)

NUNAWADING SPECTRES (78) & NORWOOD FLAMES (58)

Norwood started with great shooting from Ilze Nagy and Cherie Hogg to keep Nunawading under pressure and held the lead at halftime.

However the second half showed that Nunawading, playing their first game, could hold their momentum to forge away from Norwood, playing for the second time today. Nunawading showed their true capability in the second half to hold out Norwood for a comfortable win.

Scorers: NUNAWADING – T Browning 20, S Thornton 20. NORWOOD – C Hogg 21, I Nagy 12

MVP: Tracey Browning (Nunawading)

HOBART TIS ISLANDERS (91) & WOODVILLE WARRIORS (47)

Bob Hunnerup tried everything to get the Woodville Warriors into the match against TIS Islanders but the Tasmanian team had too many options which coach Danny Adamson used to full advantage in what was a comfortable win for the Islander girls.

The Woodville team, though outclassed for most of the match, did not give in and there was some excellent outside shooting performances.

Scorers: TIS ISLANDERS – K Foster 22, K Smith 12. WOODVILLE – J Barton 11, L Stevens 10

MVP: Kathy Foster (TIS Islanders)

BULLEEN BOOMERS (112) & PARRAMATTA WILDCATS (48)

In an excellent performance, Bulleen proved to be too strong for Parramatta Wildcats. The Bulleen girls were too sharp at both ends of the court and played some great defence. The Parramatta team seemed bewildered at times but kept working at their game, even though Bulleen had jumped to a lead of 62-25 by halftime.

The second half saw a much steadier Parramatta team and the difference between them and Bulleen was the offensive skills of the Boomers girls. Simone Gloster was outstanding with her great defence and scored 30 points for Bulleen.

Scorers: BULLEEN – S Gloster 30, J Nahyna 18. PARRAMATTA – A Hathaway 17, J Nicholson 7

MVP: Simone Gloster (Bulleen)

BRISBANE BULLETS (56) & DANDENONG RANGERS (52)

Brisbane Bullets started the game very quickly and left Dandenong a little flat-footed. It took Dandenong until the 10-minute mark of the first half to start to get into the game. Regina Days had shot 14 of Dandenong’s 23 points until halftime but the Bullets always had control of the situation.

The second half saw Brisbane Bullets keep control of the game. Dandenong got within 4 points with 22 seconds left on the clock but Brisbane Bullets were eventual winners.

Scorers: BRISBANE – T Roberts 19, G Henderson 12. DANDENONG – R Days 26, W Risely 10

MVP: Valerie Ah Wong (Brisbane)

CANBERRA CIVIC CAPITALS (74) & WEST ADELAIDE BEARCATS (61)

The game started as a hard-fought contest in which neither side was prepared to give any ground to the other. The Capitals came out in front due to the pure determination and strength on their side.

They drew away in the last few minutes to achieve a hard-fought victory.

Scorers: CANBERRA – T Hopgood 15, T Creher 14. WEST ADELAIDE – M Jenkinson 16, T Scrutton 12

MVP: C Curfman (Canberra)

BALLARAT LADY MINERS (83) & NARROMINE JETS (53)

Ballarat began the game by playing a hard fullcourt press which resulted in them getting an early jump on the Narromine Jets. Leanne Strooper was giving Ballarat good value in both defence and with her offence work.

During the second half, Ballarat Lady Miners continued with their good work of the first half and managed to extend their lead to eventually win by a comfortable margin.

Scorers: BALLARAT – C Lockett 18. NARROMINE – D Riley 11, W Richardson 10

MVP: Leanne Strooper (Ballarat)

“BUTTERFLY” Socks – You’ll fly in them

MELBOURNE TIGERS (57) & AIS PUMAS (54)

In a very tough game and arguably the best of the night, the Melbourne Tigers survived a late challenge for victory by the AIS Pumas, who had been 11 points down with 6 minutes remaining.

Both teams played very strong defence but in offence AIS missed a lot of shots early and found they had to drive to make the baskets. This tactic very nearly paid off for the Pumas before Melbourne ran out winners in a very close encounter.

Scorers: MELBOURNE – K Foley 18, K Henderson 12. AIS – T Fallon 13

MVP: Kim Foley (Melbourne)
