Hawks far from plucked

IT was D-Day - as in Deadline-Day - for Wollongong's NBL program today but the Hawks received a stay of execution when the club met with creditors.

As part of the Voluntary Administration process the Hawks entered into at the start of March, those administrators met today with the creditors (mostly the club's players) who, unsurprisingly agreed to extend the administration period.

Not exactly sure how long they can though with NBL free agency already extended to April 30.

The decision allows more time "to ensure that the Hawks have the best possible opportunity to compete in the NBL during the 2015-16 season and beyond" as the league said in its statement today.

Townsville's Crocodiles will find out their fate when they meet creditors on Saturday.

And the immediate future of a Brisbane franchise remains in the "pending" basket.

(Rest assured though - and NBL Chairman Graeme Wade will confirm this at every opportunity - Bret Mactavish and his team at NBL headquarters are putting Barack Obama and Ban Ki-moon to shame with how hard they're working every minute of the day!)

"Wollongong has seen the local community rally behind the Hawks’ cause over the last month, with multiple businesses pledging their support, including new major partner Multi Civil & Rail," today's release says.

Wade offered his support for the decision to adjourn.

“The way that Wollongong has rallied around their beloved Hawks is inspiring. It’s a testament to the club and their fanbase whose passion cannot be questioned,” he said.

Hawks GM Kim Welch, who really IS working hard, said the club wasn't out of the woods.

“We are delighted with the support we have received from the Wollongong business community and the community as a whole to date,” Welch said.

“I encourage everyone to continue to show their support to the club as we work through this next phase.”
