Here comes Cam, Ando and Rotnei

A EUROLEAGUE champion, an NBA forward and a former NBL MVP all will feature in the 2016-17 NBL season. October 6 tip-off cannot come soon enough.

Rotnei Clarke was our controversial league MVP in 2013-14 – you remember Perth’s James Ennis ditching his All Star Five trophy into the drink – with his first stint at the Hawks.

Now he is back, bolstering the NBL in the same manner Kevin Lisch and Kirk Penney did with their returns a year ago.

Brisbane today made it official, revealing it had secured former NBA forward and Rio Olympian Cameron Bairstow for its 2016-17 campaign.

That news followed last week’s revelation by Melbourne United it had signed one of Australia’s most decorated internationals, Rio-bound Boomers forward-centre David Andersen for two years.

United CEO Vince Crivelli pursued that signature with great gusto but it may well have been Andersen’s Boomers and Melbourne teammate Chris Goulding who got that across the line.

Brisbane-born Bairstow attended the University of New Mexico where triple NBA-championship winner Luc Longley also plied his trade, then followed Australia’s most successful player in The Show to Chicago Bulls where he was drafted in 2014 at 49.

He spent two seasons with the Bulls but was traded to Detroit during this off-season, before being waived by the Pistons making him suddenly available.

The 206cm 25-year-old is as huge coup for the Bullets, coach Andrej Lemanis clearly chuffed Brisbane pulled off a deal.

JUST DON'T SAY WE DIDN'T TIP THIS

“Cameron had many options available to him coming out of the NBA, so for him to come back and play in the NBL is a really positive statement on the league and where it currently sits,” Lemanis said.

“For the Bullets, it is fantastic to have a player of his calibre come back and play for his home town team and help the club re-establish itself in the NBL.

“Cameron brings fantastic skills which will be an excellent fit for the team and the fans will really enjoy watching him.

“On top of that, like all our players, he is a good person who is connected to the community and wants to see the Bullets thrive.”

Last month Andersen, 36 and 213cm and selected for his fourth Olympics with Rio, was instrumental as ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne clinched the French league championship.

It meant Andersen now has titles in the Euroleague, Italy, Russia, Spain, Turkey and France.

Previously indicating his desire to complete his career at home in the NBL, his final signature was no huge surprise, after a hiccup with French interests.

JUST DON'T SAY WE DIDN'T TELL YOU

“Its great to be home,” he said.

“I’m excited about the club and the challenge of bringing the championship back to Melbourne.

“It’s a good way to end a long career.

“For me personally it (coming home) was definitely one of the deciding factors.

“I’ve been overseas for forever now, its been a long time. I’ve got family and friends around here so moving back will be great and having the chance to play in front of them is a great thing.”
