Houston gives Clippers a rocket

THEY blew it. There's no other way to explain how the L.A. Clippers bowed out of the Western Conference playoffs today.

Leading their semi final series 3-1 against the Rockets, Los Angeles dropped Game 5 but after squandering a 19-point lead at home in Game 6, never led in today's Game 7 dismissal in Houston

The Rockets won 113-100, James Harden with 31 points, eight assists and seven boards, Dwight Howard with 16 points and 15 rebounds for his 15th double-double in 18 playoff games with Houston.

"It carried over a lot for us," Rockets swingman Corey Brewer said of the confidence his team had after the Game 6 comeback road win.

"It gave us our confidence back ... we came out and jumped on them early."

For Los Angeles coach Glenn "Doc" Rivers, he became the first coach in NBA history to lose multiple series when leading 3-1 and also fell to 0-4 in Game 7s on the road, joining George Karl and Don Nelson.

“We just had a lot of guys play well,” Houston coach Kevin McHale said.

The Clippers never have reached a Western Conference Final series and few times were they as close as this.

“Like Ricky Bobby said: 'if you’re not first, you’re last.' Close isn’t good enough,” said Clippers point guard Chris Paul, quoting Will Ferrell's character from "Talladega Nights".

Paul had a 26-point, 10-assist double.

“It’s a long summer.

“It’s getting old, to tell you the truth. I have to get better. It starts with me.”

Houston, which won NBA crowns in 1994 and 1995, hasn't been to the Western Conference Finals since 1997.

The Rockets have a tough road ahead against Golden State Warriors which swept them 4-0 during the regular season.

Teams to sweep 4-0 in the regular season and then meet in any round have a 55-6 series record.

For the Clippers, Blake Griffin had 27 points and 11 rebounds, DeAndre Jordan with 16 points and 17 boards.

The "curse" of eliminating San Antonio when the Spurs are reigning champs, continued for Los Angeles.

Team records after beating a defending champ Spurs are:
'00 Suns,
'04 Lakers
'06 Mavs,
'08 Lakers
'15 Clippers
Championships: 0
