Hugh goes but wait, there's more

DON’T be surprised if the ever wily Wildcats turn Hugh Greenwood’s decision to quit the club to play AFL into a big pay-off.

My (e)mail is that while Greenwood’s decision to quit the NBL franchise one month into a three-year contract completely blindsided Perth – why wouldn’t it? – the club already has been in contact with New Zealand Tall Blacks international guard Jarrod Kenny.

Word too is that Perth is looking to have Kenny re-rated to a “1-point player” from, I think, an 8.

Low and behold, suddenly Nathan Jawai might become an additional option.

“We made numerous decisions based on his commitment to us, so we are disappointed to lose him,” Wildcats managing director Nick Marvin said of Greenwood's surprise defection.

“However, the Wildcats family has always dealt well with adversity and this occasion will be no different.”

With apologies to Steve Carfino, no kidding.

Kenny, 29 and 188cm, grew in prominence during Game 1 of the Oceania Series for the Tall Blacks against Australia at Rod Laver Arena when he stroked three 3-pointers in a 12-point haul, second only to teammate Corey Webster’s game-high 22.

Any shot the Wildcats may have taken at much-travelled Rhys Carter ended earlier this week when he inked a deal with Sydney Kings.

Meanwhile, who says the Kings and Hawks just can't get along?

The TV team from the Kings, including mercurial Matt McQuade, brilliant Bruce Bolden and brainiac Brad Rosen are making the call tonight from the Snakepit for the live stream of the Illawarra-University of California Golden Bears game.

It’s the next best thing to being there.
