Is Bryson the next Copeland?

JOSH Childress is unlikely to fill the third import spot on the Sydney Kings’ roster, rookie NBL coach Andrew Gaze today saying there’s still no rush to add the last two players.

“We had 20 players at practice today so we’re looking at a lot of options,” the seven-time league MVP said.

“Two of our imports (Michael Bryson and Greg Whittington) arrived yesterday and trained today, and Kevin (Lisch) had his first session today.”

KING MICHAEL: New Sydney import Michael Bryson may be the key signing.

The Kings have nine contracted players, plus Chinese recruit Bo Liu, who has a development player role.

They have a third import option, which Gaze declared may NOT even be activated, depending on how the squad plays out on court.

“We’re of the understanding that’s probably not going to happen,” Gaze said of NBA swingman Childress returning for a third NBL season.

“He’s one we wanted but at this point in time, that’s not an option.

“But we’ll see what unfolds within the group.”

Gaze said Julian Khazzouh was making “really good progress” from the quad injury he suffered last season but still was not practicing.

“He believes he’ll be right for the first game but the question is what level will he be at?”

Dion Prewster, who was on the Kings’ 2015-16 roster, is training with the squad but has no guarantees.

“We’ve advised him we have to go through the process,” Gaze said, complimenting the competitive Kiwi on his attitude and approach. “He’s aware and he’s continuing to train with us. He is a great guy.

“With Kevin and Jason (Cadee), we think we might need some insurance there (at the one-spot.) The 4-5 we feel OK with and Newls can swing between 2-3.

“We also feel Michael can play a bit of three – he is super athletic.”

While it is “early days”, the initial impact of the Kings imports has Gaze wondering whether Sydney needs to burn the third import spot or save it.

“The brief I gave Jeff (CEO Jeff van Groningen) is I want the next Lanard Copeland and we’re pretty close (with Bryson),” Gaze said.

LANARD COPELAND: Is Michael Bryson the "second coming"?

“We’re waiting to see what Michael can bring us, if he can carry the ball we might look for a bigger guy (to fill the roster).”

That would alleviate the need for a third-string point man, the Kings shaping up as another exciting “must-see” team.
