It's a big NBA day

LUOL Deng joining Miami Heat is big. Mike Miller joining LeBron James at Cleveland Cavaliers is big. Brock Motum overshadowing Dante Exum at the NBA Summer League is up there too.

Let’s take them in order.

Heat President Pat Riley said: “Signing Luol Deng is one of the most important free agent signings that we have ever had in the history of the franchise.”

(Not counting LeBron James and Chris Bosh four years back, of course. Or Shaquille O’Neal before that. Riles’ memory must be starting to fade as he ages.)

With Dwyane Wade retained, the Heat are putting themselves in a position to compete for sure.

The franchise also locked away Perth Wildcats MVP James Ennis today, which is a huge positive for the "NBL experiment."

"We were excited to draft James a year ago and have been impressed by the growth of his game in Summer League and Puerto Rico, as well as his terrific experience in Australia, leading Perth to a championship," Riley said.

"We are looking forward to the infusion of energy he will bring to our roster.”

Miller, a member of the Heat’s two NBA Championship-winning teams before being shipped to Memphis last season, is Cleveland’s first signing since James made his decision to return home.

The Cavs actively pursued Miller, a friend of LeBron’s and he took a pay-cut to move to Cleveland.

Averaging 7.1ppg with the Grizzlies last season, Miller was offered a three-year deal worth $12 million by the Denver Nuggets.

He turned that down to reunite with James on a two-year deal worth $5.5 million.

James also has the Cavs chasing veteran Ray Allen who is wavering between retirement and one more season.

To Las Vegas where Utah Jazz smacked Milwaukee Bucks 87-71 at the Summer League and there was much attention on the Aussie.

But this time it wasn’t Exum but Motum who caught the eye with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting in 19 minutes.

Exum, 19, was still solid but overshadowed also by teammate Rodney Hood who had a game-high 29 points, with 7-of-10 threes.

“I took a bit of a step back,” Exum said of his six points, three assists and three turnovers.

“I’ll try and regroup for the next game.”

Oh well. Better to be hard on yourself I guess. The US media certainly won’t be gentle with the #5 draft pick.

Boomers’ World Cup squad teammate Cam Bairstow didn’t do his chances of sticking with Chicago any harm with 11 points, four assists and a game-high seven rebounds as the Bulls beat Minnesota 107-73.

Chris Goulding, starting for Dallas, had nine points on 3-of-5 triples yesterday as the Mavericks beat Toronto 88-57.

The Unicorn also had two boards, two steals and an assist.

Making Dallas happier though is the fact Championship superstar Dirk Nowitzki, 36, committed to be a “lifetime Maverick” by signing a final three-year contract for $25 million.

The big German could have earned far more but agreed to less so Dallas could accommodate recent signing Chandler Parsons in the Mavs starting frontcourt, alongside Championship centre Tyson Chandler who has returned after three lost years with New York Knicks.

AND Melbourne NBA fans, don't forget Patty Mills and Aron Baynes of the champion San Antonio Spurs, are showing off the Larry O'Brien Trophy in your city today.
