In the finish it's Lisch

KEVIN Lisch last night joined an exclusive NBL club when he became a multiple winner of the league's MVP award.

Andrew Gaze (7), Leroy Loggins (3), Chris Anstey (2), Robert Rose (2) and Scott Fisher (2) formed the NBL "First Five" of multiple winners. Now the group has its sixth man.

And Lisch joins only Robert Rose as an MVP winner at two locations.

Rose won in1993 with South East Melbourne Magic and again in 2001 with Townsville Crocodiles.

Lisch previously won in 2012 as a Perth Wildcat, the team his Illawarra Hawks face tomorrow night in Game 1 of their Semi Final Series.

He also became only the fourth player to win the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season, joining Leroy Loggins (1987), Sam Mackinnon (2007) and Chris Anstey (2008).

And in a handy form guide or omen ahead of the Swisse NBL Finals, all three went on to win championships in those years!

Melbourne United's Chris Goulding was runner-up for the second time in his past two NBL seasons while fan favourite Jerome Randle was third.

Randle became only the second player in NBL history to finish as leading scorer and top-two in assists, joining Andrew Gaze in that exclusive club.

The potential James Ennis Glug Glug Trophy may have gone to Melbourne United's Hakim Warrick. After all, from playing in the NBA to being named the NBL's Best Sixth Man could be seen as a backhanded compliment by some. But the NBL's carefully placed team of frogmen surrounding last night's function had an action-free evening, Warrick gracious in his acceptance.

Lisch too was a humble winner, perhaps more at home under the full glare of game-night lights than a ballroom spotlight.

Nick Kay's Rookie win for Townsville probably was the night's easiest to predict but it ended up a hugely successful evening for the Crocodiles with Shawn Dennis rightly recognised as Coach of the Year and Clint Steindl a big winner as the league's Most Improved Player.

Dennis acknowledged Rob Beveridge's friendship and influence on his coaching development, which again was very gracious, given Bevo was the other coach who could have plucked this award.

It was another excellent night, auguring well for the playoffs to come.
