It's the Huskies ... yes, again

BREANNA Stewart predicted she would win four NCAA championships during her years at University of Connecticut and is now just one away from fulfilling that expectation.

Stewart, the 194cm forward with the Lauren Jackson-esque game, is the latest in a very long line of superstars developed at UConn by master coach Geno Auriemma, joining famous WNBA and USA names such as Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Rebecca Lobo.

This morning in Tampa, Florida, it was Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Moriah Jefferson with 15 points apiece leading the Huskies to their 63-53 Final win over Notre Dame for UConn's third straight title.

It was Auriemma's 10th NCAA crown, putting him alongside the doyen of college basketball coaching, John Wooden, who won 10 NCAA championships at UCLA.

(Unlike Auriemma though, and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, who both hold the reins of the US women's and men's national teams respectively - that sure can't hurt your recruiting process - Wooden never had that extra carrot.)

In winning his 10th championship, Auriemma not only joins Wooden but also the NBA's Phil Jackson who won 10 championships in the pros.

But Auriemma has the amazing record of 10-0 in championship deciders and his Huskies have won five of the past seven.

Junior Stewart, whose goal was to win an NCAA crown every year, is now three-from-three with her senior year to come.

If she pulls it off, she will push Auriemma into a class of his own as an 11-time winner.

But that's a year away. Time now to savour this year's domination.
