Lightning sweeps Ruef

THE addition of US “big” Mikaela Ruef means Adelaide Lightning have now secured 40 per cent of the starting line-up of last season’s WNBL third placegetter.

Ruef at centre and Leilani Mitchell at point guard largely were responsible for much of Sydney’s success in reaching the preliminary final but now will head up the Lightning’s “rebuild” under rookie but well-established head coach Tracy York.

Ruef, 25 and a 191cm centre, was a Seattle Storm WNBA draft selection last year, before averaging 10.4 points for Sydney Uni Flames.

She also grabbed 7.8 rebounds and was fifth in the WNBL for blocked shots.

In the off-season she has been starring in the SEABL competition with Launceston, averaging 16.6ppg, 13.9rpg (second in offensive boards, first at the defensive end) and 3.3 assists.

It’s big news for the club which was perilously close to ceasing to exist two months ago.

The WNBL’s newest club, the as yet unnamed South East Queensland outfit, officially has thrown open to public opinion its potential new name.

The winner of the competition to name the club not only will have named it, but also will win prizes valued at $1,500.

This prize pack includes: an Apple watch (Sport Edition), exclusive courtside lounge seating for four on opening night, merchandise packages for four, a meet and greet with coach Shane Heal and the team, and food and drinks during the match.
