Lynx and 'Cats, a match made in Heaven

HERE'S one you did read here first - on April1, believe it or not - but Perth Wildcats finally have confirmed their ownership of the WNBL's West Coast Waves.

The club, under the ownership of Wildcats' owner Jack Bendat and his family, will return to its previous name of "Perth Lynx" but whether the club plays any WNBL-NBL double-headers remains to be seen.

The club will be operated by the Perth Wildcats management.

The WNBL license has been owned and operated by Basketball WA since 2001.

Waves coach Kennedy Kereama already has been given his marching orders and former Wildcats assistant Andy Stewart is earmarked as the new head coach.

Louella Tomlinson, the star of the Waves' 2014-15 campaign which started with a rare Spring Shield success, will be back and expect her to be joined in the Lynx frontcourt by Opals "big" Natalie Burton.

“Perth Lynx, formerly known as West Coast Waves, will be an important national league team for Western Australia to showcase a pathway for young female athletes,” WA's Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said.

"I’m really excited that the nation's most successful basketball franchise, Perth Wildcats, will now manage Perth Lynx and work closely with Basketball WA to ensure the sustainability of the club."
