NBL PotW: This week's winner fits the bill

BRISBANE All Star Lamar Patterson was one of the favourites to claim Basketball On The Internet's NBL Player of Week honours for Round 14 after going off for 35 points in the win over the defending champion Wildcats.

The versatile American forward shot at 70 percent, hit 3-of-6 threes, and added seven rebounds and three assists to boot.

It was a tour de force and likely would have won him the accolade, had it been his only match of the round. But it wasn't, and in Cairns his Bullets lost and while he did contribute 16 points and six assists, it left him shy of the prize.

Chris Goulding and Stanton Kidd had great moments in United's road win over Illawarra, and the Kings-Town trio of Jae'Sean Tate, Brad Newley, Andrew Bogut all were big in Sydney's rout of Adelaide.

The Breakers won again and Tom Abercrombie dialled back the clock somewhat with 24 points while keeping superstar Mitch Creek scoreless after halftime. That was very highly rated here.

Jon Roberson had 31 for the Phoenix in that game, a polished personal performance.

Illawarra's Todd Blanchfield enjoyed a career-best 35 points in the road loss in Adelaide, averaging 24.5 points for the round, 36ers swingman Anthony Drmic scoring 24 and with the match-clincher over the Hawks.

But when it all comes down to it, there have been a few constants in Cairns' great 2019-20 season so far, namely new faces Scott Machado and Cam Oliver. But let us not forget captain DJ Newbill, who has been enjoying a wonderful season, perhaps without the plaudits of his fresh-faced colleagues.

Newbill was The Man again for the Orange when Brisbane rallied back from an 18-point three-quarter-time deficit, turning back the Bullets with 28 points on 11-of-17 shooting, or 64 percent.

It's not only the big shots Newbill made - he was 3-of-5 from beyond the arc too - but when he made them, providing the leadership to steer the Taipans home when they suffered a major hiccup before pulling it back together.

It may be well overdue, but for us, Newbill was The Man and our NBL Player of the Week.BASKETBALL ON THE INTERNET PLAYER of the WEEK
