NBL21 TotW Rd14: Breaking into the equation

FEW would dispute New Zealand Breakers have had it the hardest of all the NBL teams in Season 21, and we're not just referencing injuries and import replacements but the mere reality of being stuck in Australia all season.

Away from home, away from family, away from friends. Their recent re-location to Launceston was a positive but even moreso last week when news broke the Breakers will make their long-awaited return to playing in New Zealand on May 20, hosting the Sydney Kings.

Late last week releasing its final six rounds of the schedule for the regular season, the NBL revealed seven home games for the Breakers who have been based (stranded?) in Australia since the start of the season.

Those seven games in Auckland are on top of six home games at the Silverdome in Launceston and one in Bendigo.

Yes, they had reasons to feel good about themselves and showed it on court, first ripping the Brisbane Bullets a new one in Launceston with a 91-71 rout.

The Breakers were never headed, led by as many as 27 and made the Bullets look second-rate, blanking the living daylights out of them.

William McDowell-White delivered a 13-point, 10-rebound, 14-assists triple-double (is the Josh Giddey "triple-double watch" still a thing?) and import Levi Randolph gave a clear indication of what is to come, his game-high 20 points including 4-of-7 threes.

Finn Delany, Tom Abercrombie - the usual suspects - also were big before the Breakers flew west to take on the league-leaders and defending champion Wildcats in Perth.

Is there a tougher assignment in the NBL?

Yet there they were at the final siren, celebrating Abercrombie's brilliant steal and layup which turned an 81-78 lead into an 83-78 win.

Randolph delivered 23 points at 68 per cent, Colt Iverson scoring 11 and snagging 17 rebounds, Corey Webster and Abercrombie with 14 points apiece at 50 per cent, Delany's five assists accompanying 13 points.

This was a gritty, gutsy win and the future only looks brighter for our unanaimous Team of the Week award recipients.

Meanwhile the Brisbane Bullets have signed NBA G-League forward BJ Johnson as the replacement for injured star Vic Law (ankle - season-ending).

Johnson, 201cm and 25, arrives shortly, before observing the obligatory two-week quarantine period.

His arrival could not be more timely after the Bullets' pathetic 20-point capitulation to New Zealand in which they helped each other to the tune of a paltry eight assists. The Breakers had 27.

Weak as P--- by Brisbane? Absolutely.
