Now Rachel makes #8

MELBOURNE Boomers now can also boast a WNBA champion in their midst when Rachel Jarry lobs back for the WNBL outfit.

Jarry’s Minnesota Lynx completed a 3-0 sweep of the Atlanta Dream 86-77 to claim their second WNBA championship in three seasons today, just in case you hadn’t heard.

Jarry joined Abby Bishop and Alison Lacey as Aussies to play for a WNBA champion in their rookie seasons, the duo doing it with Seattle Storm in 2010.

The London Olympian came off the bench to play a total of only 8:24 in the three-game sweep but, according to Opals coach Brendan Joyce, is viewed highly by the Lynx.

“The experience of being in a team that plays in the WNBA playoffs, let alone wins the title, will do wonders for her development and preparation for the WNBL season and the Opals program,” he said.

“I was able to see first-hand what sort of organisation the Minnesota Lynx are and it didn’t surprise me they would go on to win the WNBA Championship.”

Opals world champion guard Erin Phillips last year started on Indiana Fever’s WNBA champion.

Jarry brings to eight the number of Aussies who have played on WNBA champs.

They are
Lauren Jackson (Seattle Storm) 2004, 2010
Tully Bevilaqua (Seattle Storm) 2004
Penny Taylor (Phoenix Mercury) 2007, 2009
Belinda Snell (Phoenix Mercury) 2007
Abby Bishop (Seattle Storm) 2010
Alison Lacey (Seattle Storm) 2010
Erin Phillips (Indiana Fever) 2012
Rachel Jarry (Minnesota Lynx) 2013
