Penney is money for Hawks

THERE'S a 21st Century version of the Hawks' "Killer Bs" with Illawarra adding Kirk Penney to Kevin Lisch and AJ Ogilvy in its off-season NBL recruiting drive.

The "Killer 3s" might not quite have the ring of the Bs of (Jim) Bateman, (Ray) Borner) and (Don) Bickett from the Hawks of the mid-late 80s but it does beat that other option a Sydney colleague suggested - the "PLO" (Penney-Lisch-Ogilvy).

One things is for sure. With their core intact and an import yet to come, the Hawks will be terrorising the NBL this season and having preseason predictors scratching their heads.

THE KILLER Bs: Don Bickett, Ray Borner and Jim Bateman were stars for the Hawks.

Their arch rival Sydney Kings also boast their own Big Three with Josh Childress, Marcus Thornton and Julian Khazzouh.

How good is the league starting to look after the awful initial off-season we all had to wade through?

Casey Prather at Perth, Mark Worthington at Cairns - with an import replacement for Scottie Wilbekin to come - Chris Goulding back at Melbourne and Todd Blanchfield there too, Brian Conklin back to lead Townsville ... it's shaping up pretty well.

Maybe it's time to get a streaming deal in place for the Blitz in Townsville.
