Random dribbling: Seven is a lucky number

THE NBL demerger was not signed off today but largely because Basketball Australia CEO Kristina Keneally was in Melbourne.

The clubs are all in agreement and BACEOKK will meet with them on Friday now to formalise it all.

Interesting that she has expressed her concerns - as noted in an email leaked to the media last week - about the progress of the demerger, yet today she was unavailable to complete it.

Former V8 Supercars executive chairman Tony Cochrane is expected to meet with Network 10 on Wednesday on the new NBL's behalf to sort out the remaining years of the existing deal Ten signed with BA.

I know this is easy for me to say but if Ten wants out, why not let them?

Right now Seven is pursuing live sporting events to drive its digital channels and Channel 7 tycoon Kerry Stokes has always had a soft spot for the NBL.

I just think cow-towing to Ten if its interest in the NBL is minimal is counter-productive and moving on to talks with Seven - where the NBL prospered in the late 80s - makes more sense.

Tim Worner, chief executive of Seven West Media, says showing sport across multiple platforms was vital to the network's future development as a broad-based audience company.

"7mate is key to our development, in particular its increasing presence in live sports presentation and extending its leadership in key male demographics," he told The Australian Financial Review.

(And you thought I only bought the AFR for its comics and sports pages!)

BA today accepted back Barrier Reef Basketball's license for the Crocs, a formality now George Colbran's group formally has stepped away.

What does it mean? Well, according to the club, it tweeted today: "We've just closed the doors on the Suns/Crocs Club for the last time! Sad day! Tuesday next week we'll be in our new home on Keane st!!!"

Have no doubt, the Crocs will be part of the NBL.

TO paraphrase The Phantom Chronicles, "for those who came in late", Melbourne will announce Mark Worthington and Cairns will reveal Stephen Weigh as key recruits within 24 hours ... or maybe 72.

Dual-Olympian Worthington will slot into Seth Scott's vacated power forward role with the Tigers (as you read here on May 3) and Weigh will move north from Rockhampton - where he is averaging 18.2 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists in the QBL with the Rockets - to suit with the Taipans (as you read here on May 18).

A healthy Weigh, playing with the freedom of his 36ers days but with the discipline of his Wildcats years, could be one of the 2013-14 season's revelations.

Even with a broken arm - though you wouldn't wish one on him - Worthington is an asset and would bring the requisite toughness back to Melbourne.

Good signings, both.

AUSTRALIA's two NBA No.1 Draft picks - Andrew Bogut at Milwaukee Bucks and Kyrie Irving at Cleveland Cavaliers - will be on the same court at the State Basketball Centre in Knox on Wednesday.

Melbourne-born NBA star Irving, in Australia for his weeklong 1st Pick Hoops Basketball Camps, will work out with Melbourne Tigers' Boomers swingman Chris Goulding, showing off what he does in "individuals".

Similarly Bogut, who led Golden State Warriors to the Western Conference semi final this year, will hit the pine with naturalised Tigers forward Adam Ballinger for his 45-minute workout.

The sessions start with Kyrie at 7.30am and entry is just $20. Tickets are limited so after you finish reading, jump online and register.

NICE to see BA today decided to plug Kyrie Irving on Twitter.

Considering the news he was coming broke ages ago, BA's lack of support for bringing "Uncle Drew" to Oz is pretty ordinary.

Remember, some 18 months ago, BA was touting Kyrie as a possible Boomer for London yet now here he is in Australia and it takes until today to get some love from our national federation.

Just keep pumping out those Emus results though and forget about the 1,500 who turned up yesterday - some arriving as early as 2.30am - for the chance to get his signature at Kickz 101.

And for those who haven't seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DnKOc6FISU&feature=youtu.be and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLyvkBifQ3w&feature=youtu.be

WAIT a minute. Is this the Los Angeles Lakers genuinely putting up billboards begging Dwight Howard to stay?

Now I have seen/heard everything.

Wilt Chamberlain would be rolling in his grave.

RUMOR mill now has ex-36ers coach Marty Clarke surfacing at St Mary's College in California where he is highly regarded considering how many AIS players have landed there.

The Gaels do have an opening too with Tyler Ojanen vacating his job on the coaching staff as director of basketball operations to join the staff at Cal State East Bay Pioneers.

Ojanen's role at SMC involved managing the program's youth camps and clinics, overseeing student-athlete academic progress, and assisting with on-campus recruiting, team travel, video, and other aspects of the day-to-day operation of the Division I program.

Sounds right up Marty's alley, frankly.

BRETT Brown increasingly is being linked to Boston Celtics' coaching vacancy ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers head coach gig, the San Antonio Spurs assistant and Boomers boss at the London Olympics still staying "mum" (mom?) about any decision.

If he does go to the Celtics, given his family's New England background, it assuredly will be a decision of the heart.

That said, fingers crossed if he is coaching in the NBA next season, he is in for the long haul, regardless of the destination.

WILLIE Farley, Adelaide 36ers' 2002 NBL Championship starter and the club's 2005 MVP - the year he finished second to Hunter Pirates' import Brian Wethers in both the league MVP and scoring awards - started his QBL career with a win.

Farley, 37 years young, led Toowoomba Mountaineers to a 92-68 win over South West Metro with 15 points, nine rebounds, six assists, five steals, one block and a solitary turnover.

MATTHEW Dellavedova will play for Cleveland Cavaliers' at the summer pro league.

AAP had him with Orlando and NZ's NBA draft selection Steven Adams with OKC at the pro league but Delly has tweeted he is "looking forward to playing summer league with the Cavs".

DAVID Livingstone, Julius Erving and Jess Foley walk into a bar. The barman looks up from wiping glasses and says: "What's up Doc?"
