Raptors rise from extinction

KYLE Lowry is chomping at the bit to get at LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers after leading his Toronto Raptors into the Eastern Conference Final for the first time in franchise history.

Lowry delivered 35 points as Toronto completed a 116-89 win over the Miami Heat to seal a 4-3 series victory, setting up the showdown with the James Boys.

The odds are stacked against the Raptors after battling through two marathon seven-game series just to reach the Eastern Conference Final.

Cleveland will be relaxed and fresh after consecutive 4-0 sweeps so far, but  Lowry said he is looking forward to pitting his wits against the in-form James and the likes of Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to playing against those guys,” Lowry said.

“LeBron is one of the best players in the league, Kyrie is always a tough matchup, Kevin Love is always a tough matchup. But we’re going to go out there and play our game, try and do our job and see what happens.”

Some are predicting Lowry’s comments as sure to light a fire under King James but surely are making more of them than they are.

Raptors coach Dwane Casey says the challenge posed by Cleveland will be “another step for us” as his team chases its dream of an NBA Finals appearance.

“I think we’ve done everything we set out to do, but again, we’re not done yet,” Casey said.

“This group is hungry and never say never. I know one thing, our guys will compete.”

Lowry and teammate DeMar DeRozan stole the show as the Raptors motored away to a convincing clinching win in front of a raucous home crowd at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.

Lowry had nine assists and seven rebounds while DeRozan finished with 28 points and eight rebounds as Toronto finally pulled away in the second half.

Goran Dragic and Dwyane Wade led the scoring for the Heat with 16 points apiece.

The Raptors led 53-47 at halftime, then unleashed a 12-2 third quarter burst, pushing the buffer to 75-58.

DeRozan said Toronto will be ready for Cleveland.

“Once you get into the postseason, you learn nothing is going to be easy,”  he said.

“It gets tougher every single game. It’s just about battling. Nothing is going to be pretty, nothing is going to do the way you want it to go.”
