Raptors no longer endangered

COME on now. Who saw THAT coming? I mean, really?

In Toronto’s historic first Eastern Conference Finals match in Canada, the Raptors came out and laid the smackdown on Cleveland 99-84.

After 10 straight playoff wins this postseason and two wins by a combined 50 points over Toronto, the Cavs were supposed to make a formality of Game 3.

Instead, as Toronto won the opening quarter 27-24 – the first quarter the Raptors have taken off Cleveland this entire postseason – the signs were there that this could be an upset in the making.

A 33-23 second period confirmed it as DeMar DeRozan continued on for a 32-point haul while Bismack Biyombo set a Toronto playoff record with 26 rebounds. He even pulled out the Dikembe Mutombo finger wag after blocking a shot by Kyrie Irving.

Despite the injury-forced absence of centre Jonas Valanciunas, the Raptors won the boards 54-40 as LeBron James went back to his old tricks, faking and flopping in that manner that - to me, at least – tarnishes his great legacy.

You know, Bill Russell never did that crap. Or Wilt. Or Magic. Or Larry Bird.

James still led his team with 24 points, JR Smith with 22 but Irving (3-of-19) and Kevin Love (1-of-9) were MIA.

Kyle Lowry added 20 points for Toronto which now faces the big challenge in Game 4. Either tie the series or go back to Cleveland 1-3 down and with the Raptors on the verge of extinction.
