Red hot Curry burns Pelicans

GOLDEN State needed 40 points from Stephen Curry and overtime to finally shake New Orleans 123-119 today in their NBA Western Conference playoff series in New Orleans.

The top-seeded Warriors had to work overtime — literally — to take a 3-0 lead in the series, Anthony Davis pacing the Pelicans with 29 points and 15 rebounds.

Curry had nine assists with his 40 points, including seven threes, fellow “splash brother” Klay Thompson’s 28-point haul including 6-of-12 triples.

New Orleans led by 20 points at three quarter time but the Warriors roared home, Curry’s three from the corner to force the extension one of the shots of the playoffs.

How he didn’t additionally draw a foul after being slammed to the floor remains a mystery, his first attempt to tie missing but the rebound relayed back to him for a second attempt.

Aussie centre Andrew Bogut had a quieter game with six points and five boards but played great D on Davis' late attempt to tie it in the extension, preserving the win.

In MILWAUKEE, Chicago needed double-overtime to overcome the Bucks 113-106, taking a 3-0 stranglehold on their Eastern Conference first round series.

No team has ever come back from a 0-3 deficit to win a best-of-seven NBA series, the Bulls looking to complete the sweep on Sunday.

But they will be in for a fight. Ahead 94-84 with 2:50 left in regulation, they struggled to contain the Bucks who went on an 11-0 tear, with Khris Middleton scoring eight of those points.

Derrick Rose, who finished with 34 points, made a tying free throw to send the game into overtime, having carried the Bulls for most of the second half.

The Bucks went from 27-27 in the first quarter to 49-31 in the second before Chicago hit back with an 18-4 run to trail 49-53.

Jimmy Butler, who scored 24 points for Chicago, intercepted a pass from Giannis Antetokounmpo (25 points) for a layup in an 8-0 run for a 109-101 lead with 2:44 left, finally breaking the game open.

Pau Gasol enjoyed a 17-point, 14-rebound double for the Bulls, Aussie forward Cam Bairstow not hitting the hardwood in this one.

At BOSTON, Cleveland took a 3-0 lead over the Celtics as LeBron James led the Cavaliers to a 103-95 win with 31 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

Aussie guard Matthew Dellavedova had three rebounds and an assist in 10 minutes, Kevin Love with 23 points and nine boards.
