Saturday stuff: Coloring in

WE did it. You did it. We all did it. NBL Pty Ltd continues to show it will listen to a good idea by removing the totally unnecessary and ridiculous "visiting team in white" policy as of now!

No, not next year. Not going to a review. Not needing a committee. Not even a white paper!

The league has been running a poll about this issue which closes today at 4pm. But the results already are so overwhelming, expect to see Townsville tonight in green and Cairns in orange.

And tomorrow, Sydney will be in purple and Melbourne in yellow.

Sure, Wollongong in red against New Zealand and Adelaide in blue against Perth would have looked a treat but even though that's an opportunity lost, it won't happen again.

Which is great.

The only time white will be worn is where there is a genuine color clash, such as Perth versus Wollongong for example.

Yeah. I know in the grand scheme of the universe, this is only a small thing. But by getting small things right, you tend to get into good habits and get the big ones right too.

Well done to the fans and to the league.

WAS thrilled to read today that superstar NBA triple-championship winning starter and Boomers assistant coach Luc Longley grew up admiring ... wait for it ... Ray Borner!

That's right. Aussie kids following basketball back then didn't grow up wanting to be Kareem Abdul Jabbar or Bill Russell. They focused on our homegrown talents.

Just another good reason to have the Ray Borner Medal reinstated by NBL Pty Ltd this year.

(By the way. I hear Rick Longley wasn't too thrilled to hear this...)

BRAD Rosen did such a good job calling Blitz games alongside Matt McQuade in Sydney last month, my (e)mail is he will be sitting alongside Goofy calling NBL games for Ten and ONE this season, starting with the Kings-Tigers match tomorrow.

Well done Brad. It's only a matter of time before a network notices the job McQuade also does and snaps him up. Lord knows there were enough radio teams calling the Wildcats-36ers match here in Perth last night.

WHAT a fabulous walking advertisement the "Red Army" is for the Perth Wildcats.

Pre-game last night, thousands were streaming through the streets of the CBD toward Perth Arena, proudly wearing their red tops advertising the Wildcats.

Then post-game, the CBD again was awash with the red of Wildcats fans.

Street billboards promoting players, the team, their city and the league show why Perth has Australia's No.1 NBL club.

Love them or hate them, it's just a fact.

WHEN James Ennis comes to your town, get tickets to the game.

I know I called him for MVP so I may seem a little biased here. But if you want thrills-per-minute, he is the man to keep your eyes on the most in 2013-14.

You will assuredly come away with a number of "did you see that?" moments.

COPPED a little heat for my Lightning-Bendigo WNBL preview when I reiterated what a raw deal Great Britain Olympian Azania Stewart and her fellow "big" Nadeen Payne copped from our South Australian officials in the WNBL season-opening loss to West Coast last week.

Not from anyone at the game, mind you. Just from those wondering if I had an agenda.

Well yes, I do and did. Everyone should be given a fair go. That's what this country is about.

I have always hated the fact some referees seem to think they are obligated to call a "welcome to Australia" travel on any new American and worse, when officials make up their mind about a player.

Whether that is negative, as in just finding fouls that aren't there or calling travels for the sake of it, or positive, as in protecting "name" players, I do not believe it mirrors our culture's most basic tenet - fair play.

When the gent in charge of the refs mentions in passing he is "not very impressed" with this player or that, then the game starts and this player or that cop a swag of unwarranted attention, it just makes you seethe. Or it should.

HOW good was the Perth-Adelaide NBL match last night?

It was 1,000% on the last NBL game played at Perth Arena, the Wildcats-Breakers arm-wrestle for the flag.

Sure, still a few teething issues on calls but the direction is excellent. What time's the game tonight?
