Season starts for fairweather fans

THE season is off and running and just three games in, I love the passion which has some folks already writing team obituaries.

Apparently tomorrow's Adelaide-Townsville game won't even be worth playing now that both have had opening round losses.

You have to love that kind of knee-jerk reaction.

Out West, they're probably still reeling too after the Breakers started 2014-15 the way they finished 2012-13.

There were even some surprises for Lachy Reid in commentary on ONE when the whistle blew and he more than once presumed the foul was on a Breaker - but it wasn't.

In the words of the Grate Man himself, "Yeah, no kidding."

Here's a meaningless opening night stat - newcomers into lineups were the leading scorers for all the winners.

Scottie Wilbekin (23) and Torrey Craig (19) led Cairns over Adelaide, where the home side also was led by a newcomer in Jamar Wilson (22), pictured below.

Gary Ervin (22), Jahii Carson (20) and Luke Nevill (17) led the Hawks over Townsville, while Cedric Jackson (22) and Rhys Carter (14) led New Zealand to victory over Perth.

TORREY CRAIG (ABOVE): Also made a huge debut impression at Adelaide Arena.

OVER in Bendigo, WNBL teams sprung into the Spring Shield, with West Coast, Townsville, Melbourne and the home team all winners yesterday.

Townsville skipper Rachael McCully stuck a three to beat Canberra 75-72.

Then the Waves flogged depleted Dandenong 93-64.

Yes. You did read that correctly.

Melbourne held out Sydney 78-75, amid calls for Karen Dalton's immediate reinstatement as coach, presumably from her mobile.

And Bendigo opened by stopping Adelaide 73-64.

Today's games are well underway, with first-round winners Melbourne against West Coast (4pm), first-round losers Canberra and Adelaide (5pm), Dandenong and Townsville (6pm), with Bendigo facing Sydney (7pm).

The finals are tomorrow.
