Show some love on Valentine's Day

SEQ Stars, rescued late yesterday because the Logan City Council comprises some great people, will play their last WNBL home game on February 14, Valentine's Day - a great reason to go out and show some love for this terrific bunch of girls.

Yes, we're hip to the fact Basketball Australia's selection process for the club's original WNBL admittance obviously was flawed, given the fact it went into liquidation on Wednesday.

But let's also give WNBL GM Paul Maley some credit for what was achieved in about 24 hours, the salvation of the club and today my (e)mail is the South East Queensland team may not be closing its doors at the end of the 2015-16 season.

A source close to the machinations says there is genuine interest in keeping the club going and making it a truly important part of the basketball landscape.

That is all fantastic news and follows a major sponsor jumping aboard, but insisting inaugural coach Shane Heal not be associated with the club going forward.

Perhaps that explains why Heal was in Adelaide on Wednesday commentating NBL for Fox Sports, instead of staying in Brisbane while the crisis was unfolding.

BA appointed Centre of Excellence associate coach Paul Goriss to run the team for the rest of this season.

Goriss has been involved with coaching junior national teams. His presence should change the dynamic of the team which was performing well, despite considerable unrest at its direction.

LaTrobe Financial, Griffith University, Basketball Queensland, chair of the Logan City sports committee Russell Lutton, state and federal politicians, liquidator David Mansfield from Deloitte and Australian Basketballers' Association chief executive Jacob Holmes all also played key roles in saving the Stars.

Currently in Adelaide to face the MAC Lightning tonight, the Stars' playoff hopes remain very much alive, as does the club.

No-one could have expected this on Wednesday, but it's a win-win. And a big - and much-needed - one for BA.
