Tomlinson bound for Perth

PERTH is about to announce the signing of another key national league “big” after securing a championship-winning Aussie international.

Louella Tomlinson will join West Coast for its 2014-15 WNBL campaign in another coup for the 2013-14 bomb shelter resident.

Tomlinson, 26 and 193cm, is from one of Australian women’s basketball’s First Families and returns to the WNBL after averaging 14.6ppg, 6.1 rebounds and 2.9 blocks for the PINKK Pecs team which won the recent Hungarian Championship.

(They beat Abby Bishop's team, if anyone at BA is paying attention.)

A junior international for Australia after a stint at the AIS, Tomlinson averaged 16.9 points 11.1 rebounds and 6.3 blocks in the 2009-10 season and 14.1 points 9.5 rebounds and 4.7 blocks in the 2010-11 season at St Mary’s College in California.

Her 667 career blocks is second all-time in the NCAA and she is sure to have a major impact alongside recently announced Waves signings Lindsey Moore, Deanna Smith and Sarah Graham.

Expect an announcement soon but you didn't read this one here second.

THE NBL’s 1990 MVP Derek Rucker is the new head coach of Port City Power in the Queensland Basketball League.

It is great to have Derek not only back in Australia but involved in the sport.

“My goal is to instil a brand of basketball that is fundamentally sound, exciting and competitive,” he said of his new appointment.

“We have a tremendous amount of work to do with tough time constraints in order to achieve this end, but I am confident we will represent the city of Gladstone admirably in our quest.

“I will continue my training sessions with the Gladstone juniors and local schools to maintain the learning momentum that has been established over the past couple of months.

“Finally, a big thank you to everyone at Gladstone Basketball for allowing me to share my passion for the game.”

Rucker even played a fixture with the Power a few weeks ago – yes, he hit a 3-pointer – but is now the head honcho, with former Bullets teammate and also ex-Melbourne, West Sydney and Townsville forward Blair Smith his assistant coach.

USUALLY enjoy Bill Simmons’ quirky insights on ESPN’s coverage of the NBA Finals but he has been disappointing this time around.

Offering up analogies about the 1995 Finals in the wake of Game 2, then again comparing Game 4’s events to the 2004 Finals might show his expansive knowledge but for the most part, does little else.

His petulant retort after Jalen Rose and Doug Collins’ contributions in the shadows of Game 4 that he had been waiting for 10 minutes (to get a word in) left me cold.

Think the old ego needed a stroking.

NOT sure Chris Bosh was admonishing Heat fans for pouring out of the arena midway through the fourth quarter of Game 4 of the NBA Finals against San Antonio but this time he should have been.

It is possible the Heat won’t get back to Miami this season if the Spurs clinch Game 5 at home tomorrow so to desert them in Game 4 – when sections of the crowd weren’t booing – was an appalling performance.

The booing was bad enough but even worse when you factor in the core of this team is now in its fourth straight Finals Series and has given these same fans so many breathtaking moments and joyous memories.

It was pretty ordinary stuff and hardly the note on which to send the team to San Antonio to try and keep the series – and their season – alive.

Not sure how many superstars would want to take their talents to South Beach if that is how fickle the fans want to be.

Cannot conceive of Bulls, Pistons, Lakers or Celtics fans booing their teams at what might have been - and it is still only "might" - the end of a run of Championship Series.

IN case you missed it, Gary Ervin will not be back with Adelaide 36ers next NBL season.

It seems Gary, a league MVP, is a one-and-done type of guy, sadly, because he will be missed by many fans after being Adelaide's first quality import player in years.

But it was one year at Wollongong, one at Townsville and now one at Adelaide.

Ervin tweeted on Friday: "It's official I won't be going back to Adelaide. I wanna thank the fans for being behind me as a player and person"

Gary had tweeted after the Grand Final loss to Perth that he wanted to be a "Sixer for life" but after the Chris Goulding incident and his disappearances in Games 1 and 3 of the Championship Series, Adelaide decided to go in a new direction.

Let's hope for the NBL he is back to rekindle his fan favoritism. At least two clubs need an import playmaker.

TOMORROW: The Spurs were boring? Really???
