TOTW Rd9: Jumping for joy, and not on report

THIS round's NBL Team of the Week truly was a toss up between two teams - the Sydney Kings for their ruthless evisceration of the mighty Perth Wildcats or those lovable Tasmania JackJumpers winning at home over Adelaide, and away over New Zealand. That first win sure brought the best out of TJJ coach Scott Roth.

His post-win celebration, exhorting the crowd after his charges fought back from a double-digit deficit to win, was joyous to behold and full of genuine and heartfelt emotion.

There was plenty of emotion in Sydney too, especially after Perth pivot Matt Hodgson lost his cool and twice shoved Kings guard Dejan Vasiljevic in the face.

That sparked an ugly melee which spilled over the baseline and into the front row of spectactors.

The NBL's Game Review Panel today cited the following players: Hodgson (obviously) for striking twice and engaging in a  melee/brawl.

Xavier Cooks (Sydney Kings) – for unduly rough play and engaging in a melee/brawl;

Jarell Martin (Sydney Kings) – for unduly rough play and engaging in a melee/brawl;

Wani Swaka Lo Buluk (Sydney Kings) – for engaging in a melee/brawl;

Jaylen Adams (Sydney Kings) – for engaging in a melee/brawl.

All parties must respond to the Game Review Panel in the next 24 hours.

How Kings coach Chase Buford escaped sancture is a mystery. Coaches are allowed to come on the court in such an instance to drag out their own players. Bu Buford was confronting Hodgson. Not the same thing.

Post-game though the Kings had plenty to celebrate, taking down the Wildcats, who were coming in off a second consecutive road win at Illawarra.

Sydney weathered a terrific fightback too before prevailing 96-81 for arguably its best win of the season.

But OK. If truth be known, we here at the offices, warehouse and antique clock repair shop of Basketball On the Internet DID factor in Perth was due a slump after twin wins over the Hawks and the sobering news the team would not be getting home to Western Australia in the foreseeable future.

And yeah, Scott Roth's delightful shenanigans post-game was hugely impactful on our thinking.

After all, the 36ers did lead by 12 after scoring 24 in the first quarter, then 23 in the second. But Tasmania not only held Adelaide to 24 points in the second half (12 and 12), it also forced a whopping 24 turnovers.

Roth's full and halfcourt zone pressing, traps and relentless commitment to getting his club across the line paid off so handsomely, he was very much entitled to some "Roth Froth" in the siren's aftermath.

Then on Sunday, the JackJumpers were "on the road" against New Zealand. Yes, all that effectively meant was the visitor's bench and changeroom but technically it remains their historic first road win.

That 24-point success was huge and cemented Tasmania as our Team of the Week, surprisingly making it the first and only club so far to claim the top honours twice.

Meanwhile those flakey Brisbane Bullants pulled another lame disappearing act at home against South East Melbourne to become just the third club this season to attract our not-so-coveted Team of the Weak as Pi$$ title.
