United ties up Wesley

NEW Zealand was impressive with the manner in which it KO’d Melbourne out of the 2015-16 NBL Semi Finals but United now has snatched another star Breaker by signing forward Tai Wesley.

United is expected to soon reveal it has recruited triple Breakers championship import Cedric Jackson, and by now adding Guam-born power forward Wesley, severely shores up its team while weakening the runners-up.

The Breakers already have acknowledged neither player will be back with New Zealand next season.

“Recent changes to the league salary cap have meant players like Cedric are more than ever in high demand and it was made clear from his own people early in the process that there was plenty of interest in him within the NBL,” Breakers GM Dillon Boucher said.

FLYING TAI: Wesley in action for the Breakers against Perth in the Grand Final.

“We have maintained throughout the process that we are not in a position to get into a bidding war, and we wanted to add depth in the guard department of our roster so have therefore decided to pursue other options in regards our import guard spot and remain confident of exciting news in this regard.

“The club wishes Cedric all the best in his future. He will always be welcomed back here and I’m sure the fans will treasure the many great memories of him in action in a Breakers uniform.

“Tai has been with us for two seasons, winning a championship and appearing in a second Grand Final Series.

“He brought something different on court with his strength in the post and ability to shoot from deep and has been a great ambassador on and off court for the club, the club wishes him and his family all the best in the future as he too departs for a new challenge.”

Guessing while there is still room on United's roster for additional imports, some of the club's currently contracted players won't be in Melbourne's colours come Season 2016-17 tip-off.

IN case you missed the News Corp story yesterday, the NBL All-Australian team’s three matches against China’s national team all will be shown on Fox, the first match from Nanning on TV on Friday.

And shame on you to those folk referring to the NBL’s representative team as “Brisbane United”. Tsk tsk.
