United's gain is Boomers 'wildcard'

CHRIS Goulding and Melbourne United made it official today with the club confirming the World Cup Boomers shooting guard would be back for two further NBL seasons.

Despite the predictable denials at the time, pretty sure we've been saying that since April (see below) but when all is said and done, having Goulding back is great for the NBL.

Runnerup to Kevin Lisch last season for the MVP, it was a fraction crazy to think we of the great unwashed out here would believe United was NOT renegotiating with its popular free agent and the man most view as the face of the Melbourne franchise.

Hall of Fame legend Ken Cole believes Goulding may be the key to Australia finally scoring a coveted medal at the Olympic Games in Rio in August.

Cole believes Goulding would be the only pure scorer in the team, giving it that Eddie Palubinskas, Ian Davies or Andrew Gaze-type offensive presence.

Not sure how Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis sees it - Patty Mills joined that illustrious trio by leading the scoring at the London Olympics - but Cole has been a Goulding-believer since coaching him at the High Stakes Hoops tournament in Adelaide several years ago.

Cole also was in town when Goulding was the unanimous choice as MVP of the NBL's last All Star Game.

"Chris can get his own shot and you need a player like that when your offence breaks down," Cole said.

I have my potential Olympic team down to 13, now that Dante Exum appears to be on track to have his hand up for selection after suffering an ACL tear in August last year.

He is still doubtful for mine, which obviously gives you my final 12 if he is omitted. If he passes the test though? Then I do not envy Lemanis.

My Boomers for the medal dais in Rio are:

Matthew Dellavedova
Patty Mills
Joe Ingles
Aron Baynes
Andrew Bogut
Kevin Lisch
Ryan Broekhoff
Dante Exum
Chris Goulding
Brad Newley
Cameron Bairstow
David Andersen
Nathan Jawai
