Unofficially, it's official, no more Montreal games
TweetWITH his Twitter picture post today signing a 36ers contract, Dandenong Rangers SEABL star Daequon Montreal has confirmed he will be one of Adelaide’s two NBL imports this season.
Of course, you knew that already, Montreal an offensive force who will have some big nights in the NBL.
He is unlikely to suffer the fate of Adelaide’s last gamble on a SEABL import in CJ Massingale.
After looking the goods in the preseason, Massingale was never given a genuine shot by the former 36ers hierarchy and eventually cut to make way for arguably the 36ers worst ever import, Scott Christopherson.
(Christopherson was to imports what Kym Taylor was to “mature age recruits”.)
Montreal joins a long list of Sixers imports with impressive names, led by Orlando Phillips, Paris McCurdy, Dusty Rychart and Cortez Groves.
(What, you thought I wouldn’t have any interest in unusual names??)
There’s a nice synergy too with the fact former Adelaide 36ers’ NBL Championship winner John Rillie is an assistant coach now at Boise State University where Montreal played his college basketball.
Rillie has long been an advocate of Montreal’s game.
WHILE imports come and imports go, former 36ers import Rick Brunson currently isn’t going terribly far, charged with attempted criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual abuse, aggravated battery and domestic battery in Chicago.
Brunson, 42, and a former star playmaker at Temple University where he was a candidate to rejoin the team as an assistant coach, apparently used Patrick Ewing's name to book an appointment with a female massage therapist at a suburban Chicago fitness centre.
The 36ers’ 1996 MVP, Brunson’s son Jalen is ranked by ESPN as the nation's No. 1 high school point guard.
Jalen, who listed Temple among his eight selections as his college of choice post-high school, participated in the same LeBron James' Skills Academy basketball camp where next Aussie sensation Ben Simmons also took his talents.
After leaving the 36ers, Rick Brunson played for eight NBA teams from 1997 to 2006 and has been an assistant coach for college and pro teams, including the Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Bobcats.
The masseuse said she believed Brunson used an alias because she had told him she would no longer work with him.
The woman said “she was in a daze after the incident and could not recall much of her time with Brunson after the abuse concluded.”
Brunson declined an interview with police after his arrest and refused to provide a DNA sample.
He has pled not guilty and will go on trial on October 27.
