Welcome to September 1

MARK Davis was the Adelaide 36ers' icon of the 80s and early 90s, so as the club's most recognisable player still in 2001, he was the obvious candidate for the NBL's first nude calendar.

I found the NBL's masterpiece during my summer clean-up last year and it recalled how the league - as it is even now - was trying new things to garner public attention.

(You've had eight months so far to wonder whether it worked but as we enter Month #9, the fact there never was a second NBL nude calendar should reveal how well its sales went.)

The project massaged its name from the much-used "nothing but net" basketball term to "Nothin' ... but skin".

So there you go. Who says the NBL wasn't game to branch out before this current era?

MR SEPTEMBER: Mark Davis

Plugging the calendar on its release, this is the picture we ran in The Advertiser newspaper in Adelaide, of course, because it was the 36er player.

For some reason I still don't understand, my recommended caption: "Has anyone seen my ball bag?" never saw the light of day.
