All Quiet on the Horizon

QUIET day today in the basketball world so chance to reflect on some recent developments.

Superstar Corey Webster – yes, I’m using the term “superstar” advisedly, given how far Corey has come as a match-winner and international-calibre scorer – is trialling with the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans.

He’s got a shot at it and we can only hope he joins Sean Marks, Kirk Penney and Steve Adams as Kiwis with “NBA” on their resume.

DEMANDING DEFENSIVE ATTENTION: Match-winner Corey Webster attacking 36er Brendan Teys.

What does it mean for the Breakers if he does stick?

Finding a shooting guard of his quality at this stage is an impossibility so maybe it means Reuben Te Rangi gets fast-tracked.

The Breakers have a few other potential issues on the more distant horizon too with their heavy involvement in the Tall Blacks program and FIBA’s post-Rio changes to World Cup qualification.

MOUNT Gambier’s Pioneers have won their third straight SEABL South Conference championship and this weekend battle out the national title with East Conference champs Albury-Wodonga.

The Final should be a gem with Richard Hill’s crew chasing back-to-back SEABL Championship wins.

THE Sydney Kings have thrown their support behind a NSW State Government announcement it plans to build a new indoor arena in the CBD.

Having to play out of Homebush this NBL season with the imminent demolition of the Sydney Entertainment Centre, the Kings have been working together with Tennis NSW to come up with a venue solution.

Let’s face it, the Hordern Pavilion doesn’t cut it as a basketball venue and luring people out to Homebush is going to be challenging for the Kings.

Losing the Kingdome is a huge blow for Sydney and its growing fan base.

CBD-based venues - Wellington has a gem in the heart of the city which won't hurt any bid by the Kiwis for an NBL spot down the road - are a Godsend. Just ask the Wildcats, Perth Arena a huge part of the club's ongoing success and chalk-and-cheese to Challenge Stadium.
