BOB'S NCAA WRAP: UConn? You bet. Back2back!

BOB'S NCAA WRAP: The Big Dance has come to a close, the music has stopped, the weight-challenged lady has sung and BOB CRAVEN was on the spot filing this NCAA men's report, along with some updated NBA news to boot. But first, hats off to UConn coach Dan Hurley.

THE NCAA Division 1 title game was a bit of a surprise.

Credit must go to UConn coach Dan Hurley for a masterful coaching clinic, and to his players for carrying out that plan to perfection.

It was a suffocating performance by UConn as they smothered Purdue today 75-60 to become the first men's team since 2007 to capture back-to-back national championships.

UConn was led by Tristen Newton's 20 points as they won their 12th straight tourney game, all by 13 or more points.

UConn was relatively crisp on offence, but this was won by defence and the game plan of the coaching staff.

Purdue entered the game as the second-best three-point shooting team, but UConn's plan to defend the 3-point line and let 224cm post player Zach Edey play one-on-one as much as he wanted worked to perfection.

Purdue only took seven shots from behind the arc and only made one of them.  Edey, the AP POTY was allowed to go off for 37 points on 25 shot attempts, while the rest of the Purdue team scored only 23 points on 9-of-29 shooting.

It was UConn's sixth overall title, and they became only the third team to repeat as champions since John Wooden's UCLA dynasty of the 1960s and '70s.

Hurley's masterful game plan was simple. He said: "Keep their guards to 18-20 points as a group, and they would then have no chance to win, no matter how well Edey played."

College basketball is over now for the next 6-7 months, so the NBA will have no competition in the media for attention until almost summer when the WNBA starts its season.

NBA news will be heating up again as there are only a handful of games left in the regular season.

Boston is the runaway leader this season for the best record in the league. The Celtics are 62-16 and there's open water behind them for second place.

They will have the home court advantage throughout the playoffs as a result.

The other two Eastern Conference Division leaders are the Milwaukee Bucks and the Orlando Magic.

The best Divisional race in the Western Conference is in the NW Division, where there is a virtual 3-way tie at the top between the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Denver Nuggets, and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

An interesting note over the past couple of months is the number of games where a lot of points have been scored by individuals.

There have been a half dozen games where players scored 60 or more points, including two games of more than 70 points.
