Bevo: I would look at United job

PERTH NBL-championship winning coach Rob Beveridge has confirmed he would be open to talking with Melbourne United officials in the wake of Chris Anstey's shock resignation today as coach.

A club insider told me today United would call Brian Goorjian and Brendan Joyce but both men still would be considered long-shots as both have commitments.

"You have to make the call though," I was told.

Beveridge, who coached the Wildcats to the NBL crown in the 2009-10 season and to consecutive Grand Final appearances against New Zealand in 2011-12 and 2012-13, did not seek reappointment last year, Trevor Gleeson inheriting the job and winning the 2013-14 Championship.

In truth, Beveridge could have retained the job and since then, also was on Sydney's short list before it went with Damian Cotter.

The man known as "Bevo" - and Greybeard in some inner circles - was offered a job in China and had some NBA aspirations but currently is working as a consultant with a PBA team and a college program in the Philippines.

He also has some work with FIBA but told me today if United called he would happily go through the process and check out the club's set up.

"Yeah, I would consider it for sure," he said, bearing in mind his young family still is based in Perth.

Asked about Melbourne's championship chances, Bevo said: "It has some legit potential."
