Bob's Corner: Kelsey and Sabrina continue rivalry

BOB'S CORNER: A rivalry born in college has continued to play out in no uncertain fashion in the WNBA as our US correspondent and former import BOB CRAVEN reports this week from downtown Seattle. And yes, our gals Ezi and Steph are still going strong for the Storm.

KELSEY Plum of the Las Vegas Aces and Sabrina Ionescu of the NY Liberty are used to playing in tense games against each other.

Plum was an All-American multiple times for the U. of Washington, while Ionescu was an All-American multiple times for arch-rival U. of Oregon.

This past week they played against each other again and both led their WNBA teams in scoring in a very high-scoring game, with the Aces coming out on top 107-101 in New York.

Both Plum and Ionescu scored 27 points.  Las Vegas also set a league record for free throw accuracy by making 34 of 35 from the line, the best ever for a team with at least 30 attempts in a game.

OUR Seattle Storm at home defeated the Dallas Wings 83-74.  The Storm played poorly in the first half and trailed at the break but they turned it around to win comfortably.

The Storm’s relatively new experiment of playing with two excellent bigs in the middle is moving right along.

Again, Ezi Magbegor played well with 13 points (7-of-7 from the line), eight rebounds, an assist, two blocks and two steals.

The other post, Tina Charles, had 11 points, nine boards, an assist and two blocks.

Magbegor and Charles shared the floor for almost 10 minutes and it will be interesting to see if this keeps up and/or if they will both eventually start games together.

Along with Breanna Stewart, that would be one very imposing front line.

And, once again, Steph Talbot was a big contributor with 14 points, three rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal in 22 minutes.

With those wins, it’s now a two-horse race for the top spot in the WNBA’s Western Conference, with the Aces at 16-7 and the Storm right behind them at 16-8.
