Breakers up for new ownership

THE Sydney Kings may not be the only NBL franchise under new management next season with Auckland's Paul and Liz Blackwell ready to sell the New Zealand Breakers.

The Blackwells have been unbelievably great for the NZ club, acting as the sole owners for the past 11 years during which time the Breakers have flourished.

They have made five of the past six championship series and won four titles.

But a new era is unfolding now, with longtime coach Andrej Lemanis re-establishing in Brisbane, chief executive Richard Clarke joining him there and Lemanis' successor, 2015 championship coach Dean Vickerman, stepping aside.

In come Tall Blacks coach Paul Henare as Breakers coach, with club stalwart Dillon Boucher the new GM.

"I'll be doing my best to continue this great legacy Richard has built," Boucher said.

Henare was no less gracious about Vickerman, telling his predecessor in front of the audience at the club's MVP function: "You will always have a home here at Atlas Place."

The Blackwells apparently are interested in selling 100 per cent of the club or bringing in equity partners.

"They are open to different options," Michael Pleciak, who is representing them, said. "If that's another group coming in, other partners or a complete sale, they will consider all of those."

AEG Ogden are the new owners of the Kings, chairman Harvey Lister already employing Jeff Van Groningen as managing director to get the ball rolling in the harbour city.

IN other news, the government of North Korea is considering inviting the NBL to run its next election after the amazing overnight success of Alix Sweeney's Fan's Choice Photo.

Kelly Barnes' sensational pic of Nathan Sobey rejecting Stephen Holt was miles ahead the last time I checked but suddenly overnight it finished second.

There ya go. Never judge a pic by its superiority.
