Bullets need to prioritise Baynes' health

NOT going to pretend for even a millisecond that I'm privvy to anything happening in the life and mind of multiple-Olympian and long-time Boomers and NBA hero Aron Baynes but he clearly was not himself against Cairns and his behaviour was out of character.

He has copped a five-game suspension from the NBL and the corridor incident with Taipans coach Adam Forde has now been leaked and seen by most anyone with even a passing interest.

Those calling for a penalty for Forde though should remember we have only seen the footage. The NBL had access to the coach's microphone so also has the audio which, clearly, played a role too in exonerating the coach.

Baynes, an NBA championship winner with San Antonio Spurs and a member, albeit an injured one, of the Boomers who won Bronze in Tokyo, has never been the same player since those Olympics.

Whatever he is dealing with which made him over-react to the extent he did in that Taipans game, Brisbane should look at his ongoing wellbeing and consider parking him for as long as he needs.

We have evolved sufficiently now for most to understand that mental health is not an issue to be treated lightly and never with disdain.

Hopefully Brisbane put Baynes first and not rush him back for short-term gains, in much the same way Melbourne will now put Matthew Dellavedova's long-term health as its priority after he suffered concussion against Brisbane.

Give it to Brisbane – the Bullets fought it out and almost made a game of it, but Sydney had Jaylen Adams enjoying life and Jonah Bolden steadily returning to the form that saw him in the NBA as it cruised to this road win.

Bolden paired 12 points with 12 boards as the Kings had six players in double figures and Angus Glover not far back on eight.

Alex Toohey continues his emergence as this team starts finding its way.

SYDNEY KINGS 113 (Adams 26, Toohey, Galloway 16, Valentine 15, Noi 14, Bolden 12; Bolden 12 rebs; Valentine 6 assts) d BRISBANE BULLETS 102 (Sobey 26, Smith 21, Mitchell 16, Harrison, White 12; Sobey 7 rebs; Scott 11 assts) at Nissan Arena. Crowd: 3,713

NOT sure if it was United’s defence or the offences run by Perth coach John Rillie which kept Bryce Cotton to 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting but the Wildcats’ attack was far too individual to cause Melbourne any long-term grief.

Another even contribution across the board, with Ian Clark helping himself to 18 points, meant Luke Travers’ first return “home” was all it should have been, Perth contained to 34 per cent from the floor.

MELBOURNE UNITED 88 (Clark, Goulding 18, Travers, Hukporti, Dellavedova 11; Hukporti 7 rebs; Dellavedova 6 assts) d PERTH WILDCATS 81 (Pinder 25, Usher 20, C.Webster 12, Sarr, Cotton 11; Cotton, Usher, Pinder 7rebs; C.Webster 5 assts) at RAC Arena. Crowd: 10,982

THERE wasn't much in this the whole way, Jordon Crawford on song for the Jackies (27 points, 6 assists) and Jack McVeigh alight for Tasmania but Gary Browne every bit as important for SEM.

Mitch Creek and Jack McVeigh engaged in an entertaining duel of past 36ers but Browne burying a big three from the top of the key late sunk the JackJumpers, Phoenix playing without injured interim import Tyler Cook.

SOUTH EAST MELBOURNE PHOENIX 86 (Browne 20, Creek 16, Cummings 15, Kenyon 10; Browne 9 rebs; Browne 4 assts) d TASMANIA JACKJUMPERS 85 (Crawford 27, McVeigh 19, Doyle 14; McVeigh 9 rebs; Crawford 6 assts) at John Cain Arena. Crowd: 6,017

WHAT happens when a rabble meets a shemozzle? Well, until Trentyn Flowers blew the game apart with his 18 final quarter points, not much of memorable note.

Trey Kell carried the 36ers offence while Illawarra tried to show it had a spine despite playmaker Justin Robinson going 1-of-15 from the floor.

The Hawks led 60-54 at the last break but were outscored a whopping 35-20 in the last when the budding Flowers rose into full bloom. Is that enough flower-related dad jokes? No? OK, Flowers proved a thorn to the Hawks. Every good play stemmed from him. (Surely that’s enough now.)

ADELAIDE 36ERS 89 (Kell 25, Flowers 23, Wiley, Humphries 13; Wiley 9 rebs; Cadee 4 assts) d ILLAWARRA HAWKS 80 (Froling 21, Clark, Harvey 14, Swaka Lo Buluk 11; Clark 10 rebs; Robinson 4 assts) at Adelaide Entertainment Centre. Crowd: 9,108

SHEA Ili ended his shooting slump in style as Melbourne saw off Brisbane with another quality defensive effort.

Chris Goulding shot out the lights in the first half and United led by as many as 27 points before Brisbane mounted an ill-fated counter offensive.

Matthew Dellavedova, knocked to the floor taking a charge, only to have Sam McDaniel land across him from the side, smacking his head into the court, definitely came off the worse for wear, out the rest of the way with concussion protocols.

MELBOURNE UNITED 89 (Goulding 18, Ili 14, Hukporti 11, Travers, Clark 10; Hukporti 12 rebs; Ili 8 assts) d BRISBANE BULLETS 78 (Scott 19, Sobey 16, Smith 15; Harrison 8 rebs; Sobey 5 assts) at John Cain Arena. Crowd: 9,327

The round’s most uninspiring game was its last, the Kings in greater control than the scoreboard suggests and Jonah Bolden (12 and 15) just steadily getting better and better.

He helped give Sydney a 58-39 boards edge, Jordan Hunter huge with 20 points at 72 per cent and 9 rebounds.

Perth’s run-and-gun didn’t look much fun. Maybe it needs try the pass-and-blast to show some class, cause this sure isn’t working.

SYDNEY KINGS 99 (Hunter 20, Adams 18, Bolden, Valentine 13, Toohey 12; Bolden 15 rebs; Adams 6 assts) d PERTH WILDCATS 86 (Cotton 22, Usher 11, Pinder 9; Pinder 7 rebs; T.Webster 5 assts) at Qudos Bank Arena. Crowd: 10,546
