BOB'S UPDATE: Nothing could be finer than Sth Carolina

BOB'S UPDATE: Our USA correspondent BOB CRAVEN has watched as Iowa's golden run behind superstar Caitlin Clark came to an untimely end at the NCAA Big Dance, undefeated South Carolina, under master coach and former star player Dawn Staley completing their story with the women's championship.

THE women's NCAA title game between Iowa and overall #1 seed South Carolina proved once again that a superior team will often win out over a team with a once in a generation superstar.

South Carolina was looking to become the tenth team in NCAA Division I history to go through a perfect season, while Iowa was the sentimental favourite and was led by THE player, Caitlin Clark, the newly crowned all-time women's career scoring leader, whose shooting range is the envy of even some NBA players.

She has turned fans passionate and helped transform the women's game.  And they defeated South Carolina in a national semi final just last year, when Carolina was also undefeated.

Clark and Iowa started off red hot, taking a seven-point lead after the first quarter.  Clark set an all-time record in the quarter by scoring 18 points.

However, she and the Hawkeyes slowed down after that and Carolina took a three-point lead into the half-time intermission. They slowly increased their lead after that, ending up on top 87-75.

Clark was kept in check after her initial burst, scoring only 12 more points after the first quarter to finish with a game leading 30.

She made five of her first eight shots, then made only five of her last 20 in the game.

Carolina was more balanced and led by their 201cm All-American Kamilla Cardoso with 15 points and 17 rebounds, as they finished their perfect season at 38-0.

They have won three titles in the past eight years, and two of the past three.  Their record over those last three years is 109-3.

The men's title game should be a battle of the (really) big guys.  In one corner is Purdue's Zach Edey, and in the other is UConn's Donovan Klingan.

Combined, they measure 442cm in height and weigh 263kg.  Klingan is generally picked to be an NBA lottery pick in the draft.

Edey, however, is not in most draft projections, despite being the first repeat AP national POTY in more than 40 years.

He is the first player in NCAA tournament history with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in six straight games.  The question marks about him come from his mobility and shooting range.

His draft stock has risen recently, with some services putting him just outside the lottery, instead of sometime in the second round.

Klingan was a top-50 national recruit out of high school, and he's become the focal point of UConn's offence and defence.

On defence, he has such a presence that, like Edey, opponents won't even challenge him.  In the Elite 8, Illinois found out what happens when you do challenge him, as they missed all 19 shots he contested.
