Daniels ready for Wildcat 'vacation'

IT’S being reported in the West that reigning NBL champion Perth has landed another potential big NBA fish in DeAndre Daniels, the second-round draft choice confirming as much.

The Wildcats haven’t said overly much but Daniels, 22 and 206cm who, at pick 37 for Toronto Raptors was taken higher in the draft than last season’s Perth success story James Ennis, is NBL-bound.

Sounds as if he will be coming with a similar attitude to Ennis too when he says: “I’m going to Australia for four months, a long vacation, and I’m going back and will be with the Raptors.

“I’m just going to go out there and not look at it as a negative, but look at it as a positive.

“I’m just going to go out there and get better.”

Considering Ennis’ NBL season led to a roster spot with Miami Heat, Daniels certainly should not be seeing his year Down Under as a “negative”.

Appears he has plenty in common with Ennis already.

A star at University of Connecticut, the college’s blog reported the Raptors would retain Daniels’ rights for one year.

UConn reported: “It is standard operating procedure for many NBA franchises to stash second round picks overseas, as they do not have the roster space to carry them.

“The Perth Wildcats have established themselves as a strong program for fostering NBA level talents.

“Last season another NBA second round pick, James Ennis, was voted third for the NBL MVP. He has recently signed to play with the Miami Heat in the coming season.

“The Raptors hope that DeAndre Daniels can have the same sort of impact during his time Down Under.”

Daniels averaged 16 points and seven rebounds per game during this year’s NCAA tournament.

Wildcats GM Nick Marvin reportedly is finalising the paperwork with Daniels expected late this month in WA.
