Boomers boom as Pacmen pack it in

THE rust was gone, any untidiness from Tuesday polished up, and defensively the Boomers at times were exemplary as they sent the Pac-12 Conference AllStars home 93-63 losers at Hisense Arena.

Australia's Rio-bound national team should have won handsomely, of course. But the manner in which they did it was considerably more impressive than Tuesday's understandably tentative debut.

Their defensive pressure, halfcourt traps and fullcourt heat startled and inhibited the college kids who, initially at least, worked hard to prevent Aron Baynes again exerting his Game 1 influence.

Baynes ultimately overwhelmed them again for 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting, and eight boards but the star of the show was Patty Mills.

The San Antonio Spurs playmaker had 29 points at 55 per cent, including 5-of-9 threes, and was on the end of some of Joe Ingles' most breath-taking assists.

Ingles had 11, perhaps none better than his instinctive three-quarter-court pinpointer for Mills to lay in.

Ingles was more offensively aggressive and Brock Motum also looked sharp for 14 points and a game-high nine boards.

The biggest cheers though were reserved for Australia's newest NBA champion, Matthew Dellavedova.

(Delly mised the series opener due to insurance papers not arriving in time from Milwaukee Bucks, his new NBA home. They lobbed at 1:44am Wednesday morning, just over six hours too late.)

The crowd - some 15,000 over the two nights - revelled in Dellavedova's on-court exploits and his mere presence seemed to lift the teamwork.

The Boomers had 29 assists on 31 field goals, a vast improvement from Tuesday night.

Aleks Maric, filling in for the injured Andrew Bogut definitely struggled, his leap appearing to be measured horizontally these days.

Whether Maric's game style suits the quickness with which the Boomers are playing is debatable but insiders suggest he still was ahead of Nathan Jawai at the team's selection camp.

David Andersen sat out the game while Ryan Broekhoff (ankle injury in Game 1) surprised by suiting but played less than 10 minutes.

HERE'S something for Basketball Australia to investigate re eligibility, courtesy of the "Seattle Times" regarding 196cm Pac-12 swingman Matisse Thybulle:

The 19-year-old Thybulle, who was born in Scottsdale, Ariz., moved to Sydney, Australia with his family in 1998 when he was two. They lived there for seven years before settling in Sammamish, Wash. in 2005.

“I remember the beaches by our house,” Thybulle said.

“I remember I thought it was so weird when we came to the U.S. because the Santa Claus in Australia wore a speedo and rode a surfboard. And when I came here, he was all dressed up in cold weather. The seasons are opposite so our Christmas was basically in the summer.

“I have some childhood friends that are still over there that I’ve kept in touch with a little bit. "
