Delly's fingers crossed for Bogues

ANDREW Bogut wants to go to Rio with the Australian Boomers for his final Olympics to take a rush at Gold.

Don’t be in any doubt about that.

Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing Matthew Dellavedova, whose Cleveland Cavaliers squared off with Bogey’s Golden State Warriors for the NBA Championship for the second year in succession.

Delly’s first thought when Bogut crashed to the floor in Game 5, clearly in acute pain, wasn’t for the NBA Championship but for their joint venture next month in Brazil.

“It’s a serious injury,” Dellavedova said of Bogut's bone-bruising.

“When he went down, my first thought was: ‘Rio’.

“He is working on it and we all know how much it means to him.

“I know (coach) Andrej (Lemanis) will give him until the last possible moment to get it right.

“It looks doubtful but he is keen (to come).

NO STONE UNTURNED: Andrew Bogut showed last year he is determined to get to Rio.

“He showed that last year (in the Rio qualifier against New Zealand) when he hurt his back and had to fly in (to Wellington) later.

“His presence on the court just changes the whole dynamic.”

Bogut is working hard to rehab the knee and missed the weekend’s team bonding exercise at Uluru in the Northern Territory.

A Patty Mills-inspired idea to launch the Boomers’ pre-Rio camp from the site of Australia’s most iconic landmark paid off handsomely.

Basking in the shadows of Uluru only further strengthened the squad’s resolve, striking a chord of national pride which, as veteran swingman Brad Newley observed, would hold them in good stead when the going got tough at the Games.

(Stories with Matthew Dellavedova speaking about his time at Cleveland and of what LeBron James means to that city, plus how the Boomers travelled to Uluru ahead of the start of tomorrow’s selection camp, are available at News Corp online sites or can be accessed from links at the “Basketball On The Internet” Facebook page.)
