FLASHBACK 1: 1970 AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP

*FLASHBACK 1: Tuesday, October 6, 1970, Apollo Stadium, Adelaide - Australian Men's Championship

LAST NIGHT'S GAMES:

SOUTH AUSTRALIA v VICTORIA

The big crowd in attendance to watch the games last night saw SA draw first blood through Roger King in this game, followed by two more delightful jump shots. Victoria came back and hit the front by three points.

Then the game developed with the players on both sides giving everything and the lead see-sawing with defences being first class.

The scores at the interval saw a one-point lead in favour of Victoria.

In the second half SA started to make passing errors and Victoria increased their advantage and went to a 20-point lead. SA put pressure on and went down fighting.

Tony Holden displayed superb touch and was easily the best player on the court.

Final Scores: Vic 78  SA 70

Best Players - Vic: Tony Holden, Russell Simon, Ken Cole. SA: Geza Nagy, Werner Linde, Roger King.

Scorers - Vic: Holden 21, Simon 20, Kerle 17. SA: King 17, Linde 11, Harcus 10, H Nagy 10.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA v AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

Western Australia broke through to record their first win of the Carnival. At halftime they held a 12-point lead. They are improving at every game.

A highlight of this game was a two-handed dunk by Rick Longley who has dominaed the boards in all games played. The 6'10" centre is just what Australia requires to compete successfully in international basketball.

Sensing victory, WA outplayed ACT in the second half and not only registered their first 1970 Australian Championship win but also their first against ACT.

Final Scores: WA 106 ACT 79

Best Players - WA: Rick Longley, Rodney Clinch, Ian Sharpe. ACT: Ian Ellis, Neil Robertson, Julian Bugleditch.

Scorers - WA: Longley 28, Clinch 19, Radovich 16, Sharpe 12, Liddell 10. ACT: Ellis 25, Richardson 16, Sliwka 12, Bugleditch 10.

TASMANIA v QUEENSLAND

Queensland were far from being disgraced in the game against Tasmania and it was only in the last few minutes of play that Tassie got the upper hand. The game was played at lightning speed, where Chettle again figured in many brilliant interceptions.

The private duel between Randall and Van Dongen was evenly contested and the large crowd appreciated the efforts from both sides.

Final Scores - Tas 77  Queensland 70

Best Players - Tas: Wayne Chettle, Dennis Fitzmaurice, John Randall. Qld: Steve Langley, John  Van Dongen, Barry Brady.

Scorers - Tas: Chettle 18, W Fitzmaurice 12, D Fitzmaurice 12, Shipton 10. Qld: Van Dongen 20, Brady 13, Reynolds 11.

PERSONALITY CORNER

JOHN VAN DONGEN

John plays for North West District Club in Brisbane. He was born in Holland and has been playing for five years.

He is a student at Queensland Institute of Technology doing industrial chemistry. His main aim is to make an Australian team and his performances so far have been first class.

So far he is one of the leaders, having been named as best player for his team in all games played.

A prominent personality watching the games yesterday was Magarey Medallist Barrie Robran.

The autograph hunters soon cottoned on to the football champion.

Talking about autograph hunters, it was very interesting to note a group of SA under-12 lads yesterday, apparently just come from a game or training, rush the SA State team as soon as they entered the stadium. Nice to see they look up to their home team.
