FLASHBACK 123: 1978

*FLASHBACKS, my irregular "lucky dip" where I just reach into my drawers of old Australian basketball stuff and transcribe or post whatever I find for you.*

FOSSICKING around this week, came across this 1978 report about the many (and varied) performances of our Boomers, prepared for Basketball Australia by the late Dr John Raschke (Chief of Delegation) and the late Bob Staunton (Team Manager).

With Australia playing a 7-game series against the USA right around the country ahead of the 1978 FIBA World Championship (now World Cup), it seemed strangely appropriate, given the forthcoming series next month against the NBA's finest at Marvel Stadium.

It's also interesting to note amid the results of Australia's performances at its first three FIBA Worlds, that at each tournament (in 1970, 1974 and 1978) it lost to Canada.

Canada is in Australia's group for this year's World Cup in China.

When you get to the business end of the report, you'll suddenly notice - or recall - just how good Andris Blicavs was in his heyday as well.

He was the Boomers' most dominant player in the USA series and again at the Worlds.

(Yet even then, he gave pretty ordinary Christmas presents.)

Happy reminiscing!
