For whom the bell tolls

MARIANNA Tolo - no surprise there - is the Opals' latest acquisition by the WNBA, secured by Staples Center-based Los Angeles Sparks. It is official.

Tolo, who was the "find" of the Opals' 2014 Bronze Medal-winning FIBA World Championship campaign after filling the breach left by the injury to Liz Cambage - tweeted her delight earlier today.

"I feel so lucky to have this opportunity to play for the #Sparks in the WNBA! I will be joining a long list of Aussies this year. Thank you everyone for your support and kindness. #la #feelingloved #aussieinvasion"

Tolo (above), 25 and 196cm, has been playing for Bourges Basket in France.

The Mackay junior who played WNBL with Canberra after a stint at the AIS, was a league All Star Five selection in 2011.

She is not expected to be the only Opals starter at LA this season, the glamour club owned by NBA superstar Earvin "Magic" Johnson.

"We are excited about the experience, intelligence, toughness and defensive presence that Marianna brings to the Sparks," new coach Brian Agler said.

Yes, Agler formerly coached Lauren Jackson at Seattle Storm and even was a candidate for the Opals job when Carrie Graf vacated the role after the London Olympics.

Tess Madgen will join Cayla Francis and Leilani Mitchell as new Aussie faces at Phoenix Mercury, which already boasts dual-championship winner and Opals captain Penny Taylor.

While Erin Phillips is on the move, the Mercury's history with Australians pre-dates even Sandy Brondello's arrival as coach last season and goes back to Michele Timms having her #7 singlet retired and fellow Opals regular Michelle Brogan.

Timmsy's singlet was the first retired by Phoenix and at her peak with the Arizona-based WNBA club, her uniform was outselling that of then Phoenix Suns' NBA superstar Kevin Johnson.

He too eventually had his #7 retired by the Suns though, clearly, Timmsy was the more popular playmaker in Phoenix during their heydays.

Madgen's fellow Melbourne Boomers teammate, Opals' swingman Rebecca Allen, started this recent Aussie invasion when she was signed by New York Liberty.
