Griffin target as Wiley shines o's

MULTI-purpose 203cm forward Eric Griffin will be Adelaide 36ers' replacement for contracted star Jacob Wiley, who continues to attract heavy European interest.

Wiley, 24 and 203cm, averaged 12.2 points at 56 percent, 4.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists starting in 26 of Adelaide's 28 games in his 2018-19 NBL debut, signing a one-year contract extension, before leaving to complete the Spanish season with Gran Canaria.

He currently is averaging 25.3 minutes a game - the most of anyone on Gran Canaria's roster - and delivering a team-high 16.5 points, with 5.2 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game.

Adelaide coach Joey Wright recently conceded the additional European interest now being shown in Wiley meant the chances of him returning for the 2019-20 NBL season were "unlikely" at best.

It has meant the 36ers have been on the hunt for a replacement to avoid being caught out at the last minute, unearthing Griffin, 29, who is starring in the Israeli Premier League.

Undrafted out of college in 2012, apart from numerous NBA Summer League appearances, he has played extensively overseas in places such as Italy, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Poland and the NBA G-League.

While Wright did not name Griffin specifically when we previously spoke, he said at that time: "He can play 1, 2, 3, 4, is a great defender and is very much a Chris Williams-type."

(Williams was a sensation for Sydney Kings in 2002-03, guiding the club to its first championship.)

Wright was an assistant coach at Utah Jazz for the NBA Summer League in 2017 when his former 36ers players Mitch Creek (Minnesota) and Nathan Sobey (Brisbane) were on the roster.

Griffin (#17 below) also was on that roster.

He averaged 13 points at 52 percent, 6 rebounds, an assist and 2 blocks for Ironi Nahariya in the 2018-19 Israeli Premier League.

That means the Sixers' lineup to tackle the 2019-20 NBL season at Adelaide Entertainment Centre, now should look like this: *Deshon Taylor, *Ramone Moore, *Eric Griffin, Daniel Johnson, Harry Froling, Daniel Dillon, Kevin White, Anthony Drmic, Jack McVeigh, Obi Kyei, Brendan Teys.
